Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 1 active ingredient.

This product contains one active ingredient: an infusion (1:6000) of Citrus limon—the common lemon. The infusion is steeped in water and brandy as inactive ingredients.

Lemon flower essence is traditionally used as a supplement for conditions ranging from hay fever and anxiety to kidney stones and respiratory infections, though the evidence supporting these uses isn't established in our data.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Lemon product and its label doesn't state a use — see Lemon's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate lemon flower essence for any of its traditional uses—hay fever, anxiety, respiratory tract infections, kidney stones, or high blood pressure. That means the studies available don't yet show it works, but it doesn't mean it doesn't; the research just isn't there yet.

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lemon as a food or everyday drink is generally well tolerated. However, in medicinal amounts or as a concentrated supplement, safety data are sparse.

Drinking fresh lemon juice in larger quantities has triggered gastrointestinal upset in some people: in one trial, 37% of participants taking 60 mL of lemon juice twice daily reported disturbances—chiefly heartburn (21%) and epigastralgia, a pain in the upper abdomen (8%)—compared to 8% in the placebo group. Pregnancy and lactation safety information isn't on file for this ingredient.

If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.

Itraconazole (Sporanox)

Theoretically, taking itraconazole capsules or tablets with a beverage containing lemon might increase the levels and clinical effects of itraconazole.
In one case report, dissolving itraconazole tablets in a small amount of specific beverages containing lemon prior to administration increased the level of itraconazole in a lung transplant patient. In this case, the increased bioavailability was desirable and was likely due to improved tablet dissolution in the acidic beverage.
