What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lipo-6 Carnitine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pure L-carnitine. L-carnitine is an amino acid that plays a role in how your body produces energy, particularly by helping transport fatty acids into cells where they can be burned for fuel.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — glycerin, vegetable cellulose, and purified water — which are just fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence shows L-carnitine is effective for L-carnitine deficiency. For other uses, the data suggests it may be effective: it's possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), congestive heart failure (CHF), and angina (chest pain).
However, these ratings mean the evidence is suggestive but not yet conclusive, so results may vary.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. The most common side effects are stomach-related — abdominal cramps, pain, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and loss of appetite — as well as a fish-like body odor, which some people report.
High doses are more likely to cause stomach upset. Seizures have been reported rarely.
Safety data during pregnancy is not on file, so there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about this before taking it while pregnant. During breastfeeding, the evidence suggests it's possibly safe, but safety studies are limited, so caution is advised.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood thinners (particularly acenocoumarol or warfarin), because L-carnitine may increase their blood-thinning effect. Also check if you're on thyroid hormone replacement, since L-carnitine may reduce its effectiveness.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-carnitine may be worth considering if you have a documented L-carnitine deficiency or are interested in support for heart health or cholesterol, though evidence for those uses is still developing. If you take a blood thinner or thyroid hormone, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — this supplement could affect how those medications work.
Same goes if you're pregnant or breastfeeding; discuss it with your healthcare provider to decide what's right for you.

General Statements
L-Carnitine plays an important metabolic role in fat burning and energy production. Scientific research has demonstrated that L-Carnitine assists your body in converting fat to energy. L-Carnitine helps to tap into your body's fat supply by providing support for fatty acid transport to your muscles where fat can be burned as energy. This process can aid in weight loss and improve athletic performance such as increased endurance.
L-Carnitine is not a stimulant and can easily be combined with other diet products.

Lipo-6 Carnitine by Nutrex Research Basix Series Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Lipo-6 Carnitine by Nutrex Research contains pure L-carnitine, which interacts with blood thinners (anticoagulants) and thyroid hormone replacement.
The most serious concern is with acenocoumarol (Sintrom), a blood thinner similar to warfarin — L-carnitine may boost its anticoagulant effect, and case reports document elevated INR (a measure of blood thinning) when used together.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-carnitine also interacts with warfarin (Coumadin), another blood thinner, by theoretically increasing its anticoagulant effect. Additionally, thyroid hormone replacement therapy may become less effective when combined with L-carnitine, because L-carnitine appears to block thyroid hormone from entering cells where it needs to work.
Altogether, these interactions span 19 individual medications. If you take any blood thinner or thyroid hormone, check your exact medications with the tool on this page before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Lipo-6 Carnitine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Carnitine HCl
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
