HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Liposomal GABA by NuMedica
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a chemical messenger in the brain that plays a role in relaxation and nervous-system balance. The supplement is formulated as a liposomal liquid — meaning the GABA is wrapped in fat particles designed to help absorption.
The remaining ingredients are excipients: purified water, sunflower lecithin, natural berry flavor, glycerin, stevia leaf extract, and potassium sorbate (a preservative).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for GABA supplementation isn't established in our data. The facts show insufficient reliable evidence for chronic bronchitis, anxiety, athletic performance, ADHD, and cerebral palsy.
That means studies haven't yet made a clear case that it works for these uses — not that it doesn't work, but that we don't have the proof yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
GABA taken by mouth seems to be generally well tolerated short-term. The most common side effects reported in studies are drowsiness, stomach upset, minor throat burning, muscle weakness, and nausea.
One person reported a temporary loss of menstrual periods when taking GABA with another supplement. However, long-term safety hasn't been well studied.
There isn't enough safety information to recommend this supplement during pregnancy, and the safety data advises against use while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) and any sedating drugs — including sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, and pain relievers like opioids. Blood pressure drugs carry a moderate risk of lowered blood pressure; sedating medications have a minor theoretical risk of added drowsiness.
Use the medication checker below with your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GABA supplement may appeal to you if you're exploring natural options for relaxation or anxiety, but the evidence isn't clear yet whether it actually works. The main caution is with blood pressure and sedating medications — check your prescriptions first.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any regular medications, talk with your pharmacist before you start.

For each ingredient in Liposomal GABA with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Gamma Aminobutyric Acid
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
