What’s inside
Full disclosure
This liquid has two active ingredients: L-carnitine and pantothenic acid (also called vitamin B5). L-carnitine is an amino acid your body uses to move fatty acids into your cells' energy-making centers (mitochondria) so they can be burned for fuel.
Pantothenic acid is a B vitamin your body needs for energy production and making certain hormones and cholesterol. The inactive ingredients are glycerin, sorbitol, purified water, citric acid, natural flavors, potassium sorbate, and sodium benzoate.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency. For heart health and cholesterol, the evidence is weaker — it's possibly effective for congestive heart failure (a weakened heart that can't pump well), angina (chest pain from heart problems), and high cholesterol.
Pantothenic acid is effective for pantothenic acid deficiency. For other uses listed in the data — hay fever, hair loss, or alcoholism — there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, and a fishy body odor can occur at higher doses. Seizures are a rare serious side effect.
Pantothenic acid is considered safe for most people at supplement doses with few side effects; orally it's generally well tolerated, though diarrhea has been reported. There's not enough reliable data on L-carnitine use during breastfeeding, so caution is advised.
The product hasn't been studied in pregnancy — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) like warfarin or acenocoumarol, or if you take thyroid hormone replacement, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product — L-carnitine may affect how these medications work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is best for people treating an L-carnitine deficiency or exploring L-carnitine for heart or cholesterol support. If you take blood thinners or thyroid hormone medication, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — L-carnitine may change how well these drugs work.
Anyone with a history of seizures, stomach problems, or concerns in pregnancy or while breastfeeding should discuss this with their healthcare provider first.

L-Carnitine
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
