LiverCare Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Himalaya
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking LiverCare against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of LiverCare by Himalaya
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
LiverCare contains 14 ingredients, including a proprietary herbal blend and 13 listed individually. The active ingredients are chicory extract, cassia occidentalis extract, black nightshade extract, yarrow, arjuna, arjuna extract, caper bush, chicory, black nightshade, tamarisk, caper bush extract, yarrow extract, and tamarisk extract.
The product also contains one inactive ingredient: plant-based cellulose, a capsule filler. The blend combines traditional Ayurvedic herbs — arjuna and caper bush are named for their historical use in supporting heart and metabolic health, while chicory and yarrow have been used for digestive and inflammatory purposes.
Black nightshade, tamarisk, and cassia occidentalis round out the formula. The exact amounts of each ingredient aren't listed because several are bundled in the proprietary blend.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence for LiverCare's ingredients is limited. Chicory has been studied for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), fatty liver, osteoarthritis, indigestion, and high cholesterol — but our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for any of those uses.
Arjuna has been studied for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and high triglycerides, again with insufficient evidence to rate. Caper bush shows insufficient evidence for diabetes.
Black nightshade, yarrow, tamarisk, and cassia occidentalis likewise lack established evidence in the data we hold. In short, we don't have enough reliable research to say whether LiverCare works for liver health or any other purpose.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
LiverCare's ingredients are generally well tolerated in the short term, but side effects and safety gaps are worth knowing. Chicory often causes gas, bloating, belching, and abdominal pain.
Yarrow is generally well tolerated orally, though topical contact can cause skin rashes and dermatitis; a small number of people report allergies. Both chicory and yarrow may trigger allergies in people sensitive to the daisy and ragweed family.
Black nightshade carries real toxicity concerns — unripe berries and green parts are toxic, and only fully ripe fruit or properly cooked leaves are considered safer. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require caution.
Chicory and yarrow are possibly unsafe or likely unsafe in pregnancy and should be avoided in medicinal amounts. Black nightshade is likely unsafe in pregnancy and lactation due to toxicity risk.
Arjuna and caper bush lack enough safety data in pregnancy and lactation, so medicinal amounts should be avoided. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using LiverCare if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking LiverCare, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any of these: medications metabolized by liver enzymes (CYP2D6, CYP2C9, or CYP3A4 substrates — a very broad category including many common drugs), blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, diabetes medications, lithium, or chlorzoxazone (a muscle relaxer) or omeprazole (a heartburn drug). All of these carry Moderate-severity interactions with the product's arjuna, chicory, caper bush, and yarrow content.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
LiverCare is a multi-ingredient herbal supplement with documented interactions across a broad range of medications, most notably drugs processed by your liver and blood thinners. The evidence for its effectiveness isn't established in our data.
If you take any medications — especially diabetes drugs, blood thinners, or lithium — or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting. They can review your individual health situation and medications to decide if it's appropriate for you.

LiverCare by Himalaya Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
LiverCare by Himalaya does interact with medications.
The product contains chicory, arjuna (Terminalia), caper bush, and yarrow — ingredients with documented interactions across a broad range of drugs. The most serious concerns involve arjuna's effects on how your liver processes certain medications: it may increase levels of drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP2D6, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4 substrates), potentially raising their blood levels and side effects.
Altogether, these interactions span 935 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beyond liver enzyme effects, arjuna may also increase bleeding risk if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs, and it may raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you take diabetes medications. Chicory and caper bush carry similar diabetes medication concerns — they may increase hypoglycemia risk.
Yarrow can increase lithium levels, which might require a dose adjustment if you take it for bipolar disorder or another condition.
We could not check three ingredients — Cassia occidentalis, Tamarisk, and Tamarisk extract — so interaction data for them are not on file. Black Nightshade and one of the caper ingredients (from the proprietary blend) were checked and show no interactions documented in our data, though that is not a guarantee none exist.
Before you start LiverCare, run your exact medications through the checker on this page or talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.

For each ingredient in LiverCare with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Arjuna
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of Terminalia arjuna with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding in some patients.
In vitro, Terminalia arjuna bark extract inhibits platelet aggregation, decreases platelet activation, and shows antithrombotic properties.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of Terminalia bellirica or Terminalia chebula with antidiabetes drugs could affect blood sugar control and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal and in vitro research shows that Terminalia bellirica and Terminalia chebula fruit and seed extract have hypoglycemic effects.
Chlorzoxazone (Parafon Forte, Paraflex)
Theoretically, use of Terminalia chebula may increase the risk of adverse effects from chlorzoxazone.
Animal research shows that enteral administration of Terminalia chebula for 15 days prior to administration of chlorzoxazone increases blood levels of chlorzoxazone and decreases chlorzoxazone clearance. It is speculated that Terminalia chebula reduces the metabolism of chlorzoxazone by inhibiting cytochrome P450 2E1.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, use of Terminalia arjuna may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Terminalia arjuna extract inhibits CYP2C9 enzymes and reduces CYP2C9 substrate metabolism.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, use of Terminalia arjuna may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Terminalia arjuna extract inhibits CYP2D6 enzymes and reduces CYP2D6 substrate metabolism.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, use of Terminalia arjuna may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Terminalia arjuna extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes and reduces CYP3A4 substrate metabolism.
Omeprazole (Prilosec)
Theoretically, use of Terminalia chebula may increase the risk of adverse effects from omeprazole.
Animal research shows that enteral administration of Terminalia chebula for 15 days prior to administration of omeprazole increases blood levels of omeprazole and decreases omeprazole clearance. It is speculated that Terminalia chebula reduces the metabolism of omeprazole by inhibiting cytochrome P450 2C19.
Chicory extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chicory might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal and in vitro research shows that chicory extracts have antidiabetic effects.
Caper Bush
Antidiabetes Drugs
Some preliminary clinical research shows that taking caper fruit extract 1200 mg daily for 2 months can lower fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in patients with type 2 diabetes who are already taking antidiabetes drugs. However, other research does not support this effect. Until more is known, monitor blood glucose levels closely. Medication dose adjustments may be necessary.
Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
Yarrow
Lithium
Theoretically, taking yarrow with lithium might increase the levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research shows that yarrow has diuretic activity. Theoretically, due to these potential diuretic effects, yarrow might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
