Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Eurycoma Longifolia's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Eurycoma Longifolia for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Sexual desire — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence we hold shows Longjack is possibly effective for sexual desire. For athletic performance, the evidence suggests it is possibly ineffective.

For back pain, osteoporosis, and diabetes, there is insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it works — we simply don't have enough data on those uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Longjack is generally tolerated in short-term studies, but long-term safety and the quality of different products are uncertain. Because the extract can raise testosterone levels, there is a risk of testosterone-related side effects if your levels go above normal — including acne, insulin resistance, and liver effects.

The product is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to lack of safety data and possible hormonal effects.

Before you take this product, double-check propranolol (Inderal) and any other heart or blood pressure medications with your pharmacist — the extract can reduce how well propranolol works. You should also verify any medications processed by your liver's CYP1A2, CYP2C19, or CYP2A6 enzymes, and any testosterone replacement therapy.

Propranolol (Inderal)

Eurycoma longifolia can reduce the levels and clinical effects of propranolol.
A small clinical study in healthy persons shows that taking a single dose of a water-based Eurycoma longifolia extract 200 mg, in combination with a single dose of propranolol 80 mg, reduces the propranolol area under the curve (AUC) by 29%, reduces the peak concentration by 42%, and increases time to peak concentration by 86% when compared with control. Since the elimination half-life of propranolol did not change, it seems that Eurycoma longifolia alters the kinetics of propranolol by decreasing its absorption in the gut, and not by altering its metabolism. It is not known if separating administration will prevent this interaction.

Likelihood Probable Evidence A
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2A6 (Cyp2A6) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2A6 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2A6 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Testosterone

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia may further increase levels of testosterone.
A clinical study in aging males with testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL shows that taking a specific water extract of Eurycoma longifolia roots (Physta; Biotropics Malaysia) 100-200 mg daily with breakfast for 12 weeks increases total testosterone levels by 8% to 11% when compared with placebo. It is unclear whether this increase would occur in individuals with normal testosterone levels.

Longjack Extract 1000 mg Veg Capsules by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does Longjack Extract 1000 mg Veg Capsules by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Longjack Extract 1000 mg Veg Capsules has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Longjack Extract 1000 mg Veg Capsules contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will Longjack help with sexual function?
The evidence shows Longjack is possibly effective for sexual desire. That's the use case we have the most data on — but results vary person to person, and you'll want to give it time and check it with your doctor or pharmacist alongside any medications you take.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No, the safety data advises against it during pregnancy because of possible hormonal effects and lack of safety information. While breastfeeding, there isn't reliable safety information either, so it's best to avoid it. Talk to your OB or pharmacist if you have questions.
What are the main side effects I should watch for?
If Longjack raises your testosterone beyond the normal range, you may see testosterone-related side effects like acne, insulin resistance, or liver problems. These aren't guaranteed, but they're a risk if levels climb too high. That's one reason it's important to check with your pharmacist before starting, especially if you have liver concerns.
How long is it safe to take Longjack?
We have good safety data for short-term use in studies, but long-term safety isn't well established, and product quality can vary between brands. Talk to your pharmacist about how long is right for you.
Does this product have any fillers or other inactive ingredients?
The capsule itself is made from hypromellose, which is a plant-based capsule material. Otherwise it's the active extract — no other fillers added.
