Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: longjack root extract at 1000 mg per capsule. The inactive ingredients are hypromellose (a capsule material) and dextrin (a binder).

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Eurycoma Longifolia's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Eurycoma Longifolia for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Sexual desire — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for longjack is limited. Sexual desire is rated possibly effective — some research supports a benefit there.

Athletic performance is rated possibly ineffective. For back pain, osteoporosis, and diabetes, we don't hold enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or not.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Longjack is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but we don't have solid data on what happens if you take it long-term or from product to product. The bigger concern is that longjack may raise testosterone levels.

If your testosterone goes above the normal range, you could develop testosterone-related side effects like acne, insulin resistance, or liver damage. Because of this hormonal potential and insufficient safety data, longjack isn't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Eurycoma Longifolia.

Check with us before taking this if you're on propranolol (a beta-blocker) — longjack can reduce how well it works. Also double-check any medications your liver breaks down through CYP1A2, CYP2C19, or CYP2A6 enzymes, and let us know if you're using testosterone replacement therapy.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're interested in longjack for sexual desire, talk to your pharmacist first — especially if you take propranolol, any heart or blood pressure medication, or testosterone replacement. The long-term safety picture isn't clear, and the hormonal effects mean it's not for everyone.

Propranolol (Inderal)

Eurycoma longifolia can reduce the levels and clinical effects of propranolol.
A small clinical study in healthy persons shows that taking a single dose of a water-based Eurycoma longifolia extract 200 mg, in combination with a single dose of propranolol 80 mg, reduces the propranolol area under the curve (AUC) by 29%, reduces the peak concentration by 42%, and increases time to peak concentration by 86% when compared with control. Since the elimination half-life of propranolol did not change, it seems that Eurycoma longifolia alters the kinetics of propranolol by decreasing its absorption in the gut, and not by altering its metabolism. It is not known if separating administration will prevent this interaction.

Likelihood Probable Evidence A
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2A6 (Cyp2A6) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2A6 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2A6 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Testosterone

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia may further increase levels of testosterone.
A clinical study in aging males with testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL shows that taking a specific water extract of Eurycoma longifolia roots (Physta; Biotropics Malaysia) 100-200 mg daily with breakfast for 12 weeks increases total testosterone levels by 8% to 11% when compared with placebo. It is unclear whether this increase would occur in individuals with normal testosterone levels.

Longjack Tongkat Ali Veg Capsules 1000 mg by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does Longjack Tongkat Ali Veg Capsules 1000 mg by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Longjack Tongkat Ali Veg Capsules 1000 mg has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Longjack Tongkat Ali Veg Capsules 1000 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is longjack used for?
Longjack root extract is most commonly used in supplements for sexual desire. Some people also take it for athletic performance or general vitality, though the evidence for those uses is weaker or not yet established.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy, and possible hormonal effects make it risky. For breastfeeding, there's no reliable safety information either. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing and want to discuss options.
What are the side effects of longjack?
In studies, it's been generally well tolerated short-term. The main concern is if it raises your testosterone beyond the normal range — that can lead to acne, insulin resistance, liver damage, and other testosterone-related effects. Long-term safety isn't well established.
Does this product have any fillers or other ingredients I should know about?
This capsule contains hypromellose (the capsule material) and dextrin (a binder), both inactive ingredients. The active ingredient is just the longjack root extract.
How much does longjack actually increase testosterone?
In one study of men with low testosterone, a specific extract increased levels by 8% to 10% over 12 weeks. Individual results vary, and we don't have enough data to predict what will happen in any one person.
Is this safe to take long-term?
We have good short-term safety data from studies, but we don't know much about long-term use or how product quality varies between brands. Talk to your pharmacist about how long you plan to take it and whether it's right for you.
