HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Magnolia Bark by Samsara Herbs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: magnolia bark powder. Magnolia has been used traditionally for centuries and contains active compounds called honokiol and magnolol, which research suggests may have calming and anti-inflammatory properties.
There are no inactive fillers listed for this product.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The data shows magnolia bark is possibly effective for gingivitis (gum inflammation). For other uses — anxiety, hay fever, and dental plaque — there isn't enough reliable evidence in our records to rate how well it works.
If you're considering it for one of those purposes, talk with your doctor about whether the current evidence is strong enough for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Magnolia seems to be well tolerated when taken by mouth in the short term, though human safety data is limited. Topically, it can cause contact dermatitis in some people.
In clinical trials, a small number of participants reported side effects like sexual dysfunction, hand shaking, numbness around the mouth, fatigue, and headache, though it's unclear whether magnolia itself was responsible. Magnolia is not recommended in pregnancy because safety data suggests it may affect the uterus.
There isn't enough safety information for breastfeeding, so it's best avoided while nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel) — magnolia may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you take any CNS depressants, such as benzodiazepines, sleep aids, or opioids, because magnolia could add to their drowsy effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Magnolia bark may be worth considering if you're dealing with gingivitis and want to explore herbal options — just know the evidence is modest. Because it can interact with blood thinners and sedating medications, check your prescriptions before starting.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, this one isn't recommended. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you and your medications.

Magnolia monograph & interactionsMagnolia Bark by Samsara Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Magnolia Bark by Samsara Herbs contains magnolia, which has documented interactions with two medication categories.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (medications that prevent clotting), where magnolia might add to their effects and raise bleeding risk — this is a Moderate severity interaction based on lab research showing magnolia's active compounds inhibit platelet clumping.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Magnolia also has a Moderate interaction with CNS depressants (sedating medications like benzodiazepines, sleep aids, and some pain relievers). In animal and lab studies, magnolia's constituents honokiol and magnolol show sedative effects that could add to the drowsiness these medications already cause, especially at larger doses.
Altogether, these interactions span 351 individual medications. Before you start magnolia bark, run your exact prescriptions through the interaction checker on this page — or talk with your doctor or pharmacist — to make sure none of your current medications fall into these categories.

Magnolia
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, magnolia might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the chemicals magnolol and honokiol, isolated from magnolia bark, inhibit platelet aggregation that is experimentally induced by collagen and arachidonic acid. However, they do not inhibit platelet aggregation that is induced by adenosine diphosphate, platelet-activating factor, or thrombin. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.
