Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Magnolia Bark Tablets contain one active ingredient: magnolia bark extract at 200 mg per tablet. Magnolia bark is derived from the magnolia tree and contains compounds called honokiol and magnolol, which research suggests may have calming and anti-inflammatory effects.

The tablet also contains inactive ingredients used to form and stabilize the pill: silicon dioxide, stearic acid, di calcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, and croscarmellose sodium.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Magnolia's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Magnolia for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Gingivitis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Magnolia bark is possibly effective for reducing gingivitis (gum inflammation), based on the evidence we hold. For other uses listed—hay fever, anxiety, and dental plaque—the evidence isn't established well enough to rate, so we can't say whether it works for those purposes.

Talk with your doctor about whether this product is a fit for what you're looking to address.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Orally, magnolia bark is generally well tolerated, though human safety data is limited. In clinical trials, a small number of participants reported side effects including sexual dysfunction, shaking hands, numbness around the mouth, fatigue, and headache—though it's unclear whether magnolia was the cause or another factor in those studies.

During pregnancy, magnolia bark is considered unsafe due to concerns it may affect the uterus, so you should avoid it if you're pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Breastfeeding safety data is inadequate, so it's best avoided while nursing.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding and want to use this product.

Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel)—magnolia may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you use any central nervous system depressants, including sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, or opioids, as the combination could increase drowsiness.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, magnolia might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the chemicals magnolol and honokiol, isolated from magnolia bark, inhibit platelet aggregation that is experimentally induced by collagen and arachidonic acid. However, they do not inhibit platelet aggregation that is induced by adenosine diphosphate, platelet-activating factor, or thrombin. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cns Depressants

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.

Magnolia Bark Tablets 200 mg by Nootropics Depot: Common Questions

Does Magnolia Bark Tablets 200 mg by Nootropics Depot interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Magnolia Bark Tablets 200 mg has a known interaction with 351 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Magnolia Bark Tablets 200 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Magnolia bark is not recommended in pregnancy due to concerns about effects on the uterus, and breastfeeding safety data doesn't exist, so it's best avoided while nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
What are the most common side effects?
Taken by mouth, magnolia bark appears to be well tolerated overall. A small number of trial participants reported sexual dysfunction, tremors, numbness, fatigue, and headache, though it's unclear whether magnolia was responsible. If applied to skin, contact dermatitis (skin irritation) is possible, though this product is a tablet, not a topical.
Does this actually help with anxiety?
The evidence we hold isn't strong enough yet to rate whether magnolia works for anxiety. If that's what you're considering it for, talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense alongside your current treatment.
What is magnolia bark extract, and what does it do?
Magnolia bark extract comes from the magnolia tree and contains compounds called honokiol and magnolol. Research suggests these compounds have sedative and anti-inflammatory properties, which is why magnolia is studied for conditions like anxiety and gum inflammation.
Why does this interact with so many medications?
This product interacts with 351 individual medications, but the interactions fall into two main categories: blood thinners and depressants of the central nervous system. The magnolia bark's sedative effects can add up with sedative drugs, and its effect on platelet function can add to the bleeding risk of anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs.
