The evidence on these ingredients is limited. For cassia cinnamon, we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for amenorrhea, angina, common cold, diabetes, diarrhea, or dyslipidemia.
For clove, the only condition with some evidence is ventilator-associated pneumonia (a serious lung infection), which is rated possibly effective — though this applies to a very specific medical setting, not general use. Evidence for cough, acute pain, and indigestion is insufficient.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Cassia cinnamon is generally well tolerated in food amounts, though supplement doses high in coumarin may harm the liver over time, especially with prolonged, very high-dose use. Food amounts are likely fine during pregnancy and breastfeeding (rated likely safe), but avoid medicinal or high-dose supplement amounts.
In clinical trials, one person on 1 gram daily for 90 days developed a rash, and one person reported a low blood sugar seizure (though timing made causation unclear). There's also a documented case of contact dermatitis from cinnamon in the diet that cleared within five days of stopping.
Clove is safe as a food spice but concentrated clove oil and supplements can irritate or be toxic in large amounts — as little as 5–10 mL of clove oil can be dangerous in children. Orally, clove is well tolerated as a spice; topically it's generally well tolerated (though burning, contact dermatitis, and mucous membrane irritation can occur).
Rare serious effects like liver failure have been reported with oral use. Clove is rated likely safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding at food amounts, but avoid medicinal or essential-oil doses without clearance from your provider.

Cassia cinnamon's most serious concern is with drugs that stress the liver (hepatotoxic drugs). In theory, large doses of cassia cinnamon might add to that stress over time, since cinnamon contains coumarin, a compound that can harm the liver with prolonged, high-dose use.
This is rated Moderate severity. Cassia cinnamon may also lower blood sugar (glucose) levels, so it could have an additive effect with diabetes medications — dose adjustments might be needed.
Clove extract carries several Moderate-severity interactions tied to how your liver breaks down medications. In lab studies, clove's active compound (eugenol) can slow the metabolism of drugs processed by five different liver pathways (CYP2D6, CYP1A2, CYP3A4, CYP2C9 substrates), which could raise drug levels in your body — though this hasn't been seen in humans yet.
Clove may also lower blood sugar like cassia cinnamon does. There's a Minor-severity risk of increased bleeding if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs, and a Minor risk that clove oil could boost absorption of topical ibuprofen.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove extracts with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical and laboratory research suggest that polyphenol extracts from clove flower buds might lower blood glucose levels. Dosing adjustments for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents may be necessary when taken with clove. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP1A2 in a dose-dependent manner,. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, inhibits CYP2C9 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP2D6 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, clove oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that eugenol, a constituent of clove, has antiplatelet activity. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Others)
Theoretically, topical application of clove oil with ibuprofen might increase the absorption and side effects of topical ibuprofen.
Laboratory research shows that topical application of clove oil increases the absorption of topical ibuprofen. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Vietnamese Cassia Cinnamon 6% oil extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, cassia cinnamon may have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Cassia cinnamon may lower blood glucose levels, and have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetic agents. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, large doses of cassia cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
