Marshmallow Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Marshmallow against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a single-ingredient product: certified organic fresh marshmallow in liquid form. The preparation also contains grain alcohol and deionized water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on marshmallow doesn't establish that it works reliably for any of the conditions it's used for—vaginal yeast infections, diarrhea, leg ulcers, eczema, and respiratory infections all carry a rating of insufficient reliable evidence. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the science isn't there yet to say one way or another.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Marshmallow is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but human safety data are limited. There isn't enough reliable information to know whether it's safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding—the safety data advises against use in both situations.
If you're pregnant, nursing, or thinking about it, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium, do not start this product without checking with your doctor first—marshmallow may raise lithium levels and increase toxicity risk. If you take other oral medications, space them at least 30–60 minutes apart from this liquid.
Blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs like aspirin also warrant a quick conversation with your pharmacist or doctor.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Marshmallow Liquid is a single-ingredient herbal supplement with limited evidence of effectiveness and some potential interactions, especially with lithium and oral medications. If you take any medications—particularly lithium, blood thinners, or other oral drugs—check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting, as dose timing and adjustments may matter.

Marshmallow by Village Vitality Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Village Vitality's Marshmallow Liquid interacts with medications through its marshmallow root and leaf content.
The most serious interaction is with lithium, a mood-stabilizing medication: marshmallow's diuretic effects may reduce how your kidneys clear lithium, raising its levels in your blood and risking toxicity. Your doctor may need to adjust your lithium dose if you use this product.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Marshmallow also affects how your body absorbs oral medications. Its mucilage (a naturally thick, gummy compound) can slow or reduce absorption of drugs you swallow, potentially making them less effective.
If you take other oral medications, wait 30–60 minutes after taking them before using this marshmallow product. Additionally, marshmallow flower theoretically has antiplatelet effects—meaning it might thin your blood slightly—so combining it with blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin warrants caution, though the root and leaf in supplements are more common than the flower.
Altoogether, these interactions span 2,041 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below to search your exact prescriptions before starting.

certified organic fresh Marshmallow
Lithium
Theoretically, due to potential diuretic effects, marshmallow might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Marshmallow is thought to have diuretic properties. To avoid lithium toxicity, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when used with marshmallow.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, marshmallow flower might have antiplatelet effects.
Animal research suggests that marshmallow flower extract has antiplatelet effects. However, the root and leaf of marshmallow, not the flower, are the plant parts most commonly found in dietary supplements. Theoretically, use of marshmallow flower with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs can have additive effects, and might increase the risk for bleeding in some patients.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, mucilage in marshmallow might impair absorption of oral drugs.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
