Lemon balm and chamomile are generally well tolerated for short-term use in most healthy adults, though high doses and long-term safety haven't been well studied. Holy basil is also generally well tolerated short-term, though long-term data are limited.

The most commonly reported side effects with holy basil are loose stools and nausea, affecting a small number of trial participants. Lemon balm may cause dizziness and sedation, though these don't appear to occur more often than with placebo.

In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
