Moducare Daily Immune Support contains three active ingredients. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol used for its effects on dental health and other purposes.
Plant sterols are compounds found in plants that work on cholesterol levels. Plant sterolins are also present, though we don't have detailed monograph data for that component.
The product also contains several inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, grape flavor, inulin, silicon dioxide, citric acid, magnesium stearate, and malic acid — which are fillers, binders, and flavor agents.
Does it work?
Not established
For xylitol, the evidence is strongest for preventing tooth decay (cavities), where it's rated likely effective. It's possibly effective for ear infections (otitis media).
The evidence for dry mouth, cystic fibrosis, and Gulf War syndrome is too limited to rate. Plant sterols are likely effective for high cholesterol and possibly effective for reducing the risk of heart disease.
The science here is solid for cholesterol management specifically.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Xylitol is generally well tolerated in normal food amounts, but high doses — around 30 to 40 grams — can cause digestive upset, diarrhea, and bloating. A small number of allergic reactions have been reported, including one case of a severe reaction (anaphylaxis) in a young child.
Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, so keep this product away from pets. Plant sterols are generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses for most adults.
We don't have enough data on their safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so discuss their use with your doctor if you're pregnant or nursing. One case of a skin rash and one case of abdominal discomfort have been reported in clinical use.
