What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: spirulina, a blue-green algae, at 500 mg per tablet. The only other ingredient listed is silicon dioxide, an inactive filler.
That's it — a straightforward single-ingredient supplement.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for spirulina is mixed. For high blood pressure, it's possibly effective — that's the strongest claim we can make from the data we hold.
For acne, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), iron deficiency anemia, and arsenic poisoning, the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it. In other words, we don't have reliable data showing it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spirulina is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though some people report mild stomach upset — abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, or fatigue. Allergic reactions are rare but possible; a small number of cases including rashes, itching, and one severe case of anaphylaxis have been reported.
There's also a caution about quality: spirulina products can vary, and some have been contaminated with toxins or heavy metals. We don't have enough safety data for use during pregnancy or lactation, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding before taking this.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this spirulina, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin (Moderate concern), immunosuppressant medications (Moderate concern), or diabetes drugs (Moderate concern). These are the main medication types where an interaction is documented.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Spirulina may help with high blood pressure, but the evidence for other uses isn't solid yet. If you take blood thinners, immune-suppressing drugs, or diabetes medications, check with your pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real, even if it's not certain.
Quality and contamination are also a concern with blue-green algae products, so make sure you trust the brand.

Certified Organic Spirulina 500 mg by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NOW's Certified Organic Spirulina can interact with a few important medication types.
The main concern is anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs — blood thinners like warfarin and aspirin. Spirulina has shown blood-thinning effects in lab studies, so theoretically it could increase bleeding risk, though this is considered unlikely based on the evidence we have.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Immune-suppressing medications (used after transplants or for certain autoimmune conditions) are a Moderate concern too. Spirulina stimulates your immune system, which could work against what those drugs are trying to do.
Similarly, if you take diabetes medications, spirulina might lower your blood sugar further — some human studies show it can have a blood-sugar-lowering effect, raising the theoretical risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to run through your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Certified Organic Spirulina 500 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Spirulina
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.
