Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thinking behind this pairing. Humira (adalimumab) is a biologic that purposely dials down an overactive immune system to ease conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and psoriasis. Blue-green algae, on the other hand, are thought to do the opposite and gently rev up immune activity. So in theory, the algae could push against what Humira is trying to do, which might make your symptoms (joint pain, swelling, gut flare-ups) harder to control.

I want to be honest, though: this concern comes from lab and animal studies, not from people taking both together, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. I'd hold off on starting blue-green algae and run it by your rheumatologist or pharmacist first, especially since some products also carry contamination concerns.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Adalimumab page

“Adalimumab (Humira) works by dialing down an overactive immune system, which is what makes this list so uniform: all 53 supplements on file are flagged for one reason, they may stimulate immunity and could, in theory, blunt the drug's effect. None of the interactions is rated major (52 are moderate, one minor), so for most people this…”
