Plant Sterols are compounds from plants that help lower cholesterol by blocking how much cholesterol your body absorbs from food. Plant Sterolins — we don't have data on file for this one.
The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose (a binder), inulin, and flavoring.
Does it work?
Not established
Xylitol is likely effective for preventing cavities (dental caries). For ear infections (otitis media), the evidence is weaker — it's possibly effective.
The data doesn't establish whether it helps with gulf war syndrome, cystic fibrosis, or dry mouth. Plant Sterols are likely effective for lowering cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), including familial high cholesterol.
They're possibly effective for lowering the risk of heart disease. We don't have effectiveness data on file for Plant Sterolins.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Xylitol is generally well tolerated in the amounts found in food, though high doses (30–40 grams) can cause digestive upset — diarrhea, gas, and cramping. A few cases of allergic reactions have been reported, including one serious reaction in a very young child.
Minor stinging in the nose or occasional nosebleeds have been reported with nasal use. Plant Sterols are generally well tolerated at normal supplement doses for most adults.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the safety of concentrated plant sterol supplements hasn't been well studied, so talk with your doctor before using this product if you're pregnant or nursing. One case of a skin rash and one case of digestive upset have been reported.
