Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: spirulina, a blue-green algae, at 500 mg per tablet. The only other ingredient listed is silicon dioxide, an inactive filler.

That's it — a straightforward single-ingredient supplement.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Blue-green Algae's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Nutrient-rich whole food supplement.
  • We looked for evidence on: Malnutrition, Athletic performance, Stress, Mental alertness, Obesity, Dyslipidemia — and 4 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Blue-green Algae is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Athletic performance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Blue-green Algae is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Dyslipidemia, Mental alertness, Obesity, Stress, and more.

The evidence for spirulina is mixed. For high blood pressure, it's possibly effective — that's the strongest claim we can make from the data we hold.

For acne, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), iron deficiency anemia, and arsenic poisoning, the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it. In other words, we don't have reliable data showing it works for those uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Spirulina is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though some people report mild stomach upset — abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, or fatigue. Allergic reactions are rare but possible; a small number of cases including rashes, itching, and one severe case of anaphylaxis have been reported.

There's also a caution about quality: spirulina products can vary, and some have been contaminated with toxins or heavy metals. We don't have enough safety data for use during pregnancy or lactation, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding before taking this.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Blue-green Algae.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; immunosuppressants / transplant drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 327 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this spirulina, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin (Moderate concern), immunosuppressant medications (Moderate concern), or diabetes drugs (Moderate concern). These are the main medication types where an interaction is documented.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Spirulina may help with high blood pressure, but the evidence for other uses isn't solid yet. If you take blood thinners, immune-suppressing drugs, or diabetes medications, check with your pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real, even if it's not certain.

Quality and contamination are also a concern with blue-green algae products, so make sure you trust the brand.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.

Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D
Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Immunosuppressants

Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.

Certified Organic Spirulina 500 mg by NOW: Common Questions

Does Certified Organic Spirulina 500 mg by NOW interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Certified Organic Spirulina 500 mg has a known interaction with 327 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Certified Organic Spirulina 500 mg contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does spirulina actually lower blood pressure?
It's possibly effective for high blood pressure — that's the best evidence we have for spirulina. But it's not proven to work for everyone, and it's not a replacement for blood pressure medication.
What side effects might I notice?
Most people tolerate it fine, but stomach issues like bloating, diarrhea, nausea, or cramps can happen. Headache, dizziness, and fatigue are also reported. Allergic reactions are rare but possible — rashes or itching, and very rarely severe reactions like anaphylaxis.
Is it safe if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have enough safety data to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding — they can give you personalized advice.
Can I trust that this spirulina is pure?
Quality varies across spirulina products, and some have been contaminated with toxins or heavy metals. That's a real concern with blue-green algae supplements, so make sure you're buying from a brand you trust.
Will spirulina help my anemia or acne?
The evidence isn't established for either of those uses. We don't have reliable data showing spirulina works for iron deficiency anemia or acne, so we can't recommend it for those.
