Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Mullein's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: respiratory health and cough relief.
  • We looked for evidence on: Asthma, Bronchitis, Cough, Influenza, Pneumonia, chest congestion — and 2 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Mullein is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Bronchitis (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Mullein is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Asthma, Cough, Influenza, Pneumonia.

The evidence for Mullein's effectiveness isn't established in the data we hold. Studies on Bronchitis, Asthma, Migraine headache, Cough, and Diarrhea all show insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it works for these uses.

If you're considering it for a specific condition, it's worth talking that over with your doctor or pharmacist to see if there are better-supported options.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mullein is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though human safety data are limited. The main concern is a small number of case reports describing contact dermatitis (skin irritation) after touching the whole plant or breathing in plant dust from occupational exposure—and in one case the person also reacted to other plants.

The product should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough safety information to know whether it's safe.

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Mullein.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you start, double-check if you take any anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners or antiplatelet medications like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel). Mullein may have mild blood-thinning effects that could add to theirs.

Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it's safe for you to use together.

For pregnancy or breastfeeding, the safety data aren't there, so talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Lab tests on extracts from different parts of common and dense-flowered mullein plants show that they do have some blood-thinning effects, as they increase the time it takes for blood to clot. This is likely due to at least one of the known constituents of muellein, triterpenoid saponins. However, the effects appear to be mild and results have been inconsistent. Extracts from different plant parts have been show to have varying anticoagulant strengths, with water-based ones being more potent than alcohol-based extracts.
