There's a cautionary note in the medical literature about Bacillus subtilis var. natto (a different strain) and serious infections like bloodstream or brain infection in people who are immunocompromised—this was linked to very frequent consumption of natto (fermented soybeans). Nanoflora contains DE111. DE111 is Deerland Enzymes' single strain of the probiotic spore, Bacillus Subtilis. DE111 controls microbial populations in the gut by crowding out the bad bacteria such as E. Coli, making room for growth of good bacteria. DE111 can bind to the epithelial cells of the intestinal lining and increase numbers; this promotes a stronger intestinal lining to protect against immune response to food molecules that may be interpreted by the body as foreign objects.

Theoretically, taking Bacillus subtilis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. subtilis.
