Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Iodine's overall clinical evidence instead.

Strong

Strong clinical evidence supports Iodine for:

Why this rating?
  • The label markets general wellness (“energy and stamina support”), not a specific health condition, so there is no single claim to grade against clinical-evidence data.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Radiation exposure — rated "Likely Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Iodine deficiency — rated "Likely Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Fibrocystic breast disease — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Oral mucositis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Periodontitis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Iodine is likely effective for preventing radiation exposure and treating iodine deficiency. It's possibly effective for oral mucositis (mouth sores) and periodontitis (gum disease).

The evidence we have supports its use for these purposes, though the strength of evidence varies by condition.

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Iodine is well tolerated in normal dietary amounts. High doses, however, can cause thyroid problems — including both underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) — so stick to the amount your doctor recommends.

Common side effects at higher doses include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal upset, headache, a metallic taste, and a stuffy or runny nose. Rarely, some people can have a hypersensitivity reaction with symptoms like hives, swelling, or fever; if that happens, stop and seek medical attention.

During pregnancy, adequate iodine is important for the baby's development, but use only what your doctor advises and avoid high-dose products. While breastfeeding, some iodine does pass into breast milk, so follow your doctor's guidance on dosing.
