HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Olive Leaf Extract 250 mg by Solaray
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: lemon balm and olive leaf extract. Lemon balm is traditionally used to help with stress and cold sores, while olive leaf extract is included for general wellness support.
The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients — rice concentrate, vegetable cellulose (the capsule itself), maltodextrin, rice extract blend, and silica — which are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm in this product is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) and possibly effective for stress and depression, based on available evidence. Olive leaf extract's effectiveness is less clear — the evidence we hold rates it insufficient for osteoporosis, upset stomach, respiratory infections, shingles, flu, and osteoarthritis.
In other words, we don't yet have strong evidence backing olive leaf extract for any of these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in most healthy adults, but high doses and long-term safety haven't been well studied. Reported side effects are rare — some people have experienced dizziness or sedation in clinical trials, but these don't occur more often with lemon balm than with placebo.
One unusual case reported heart rhythm changes (atrioventricular block and QT prolongation) in a person using a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, though it's unclear if lemon balm alone was the cause. Olive leaf extract is well tolerated in most people.
The most common side effects reported are headache and stomach discomfort. One trial participant reported acne.
Since concentrated olive leaf supplements are less studied than whole olives and olive oil as foods, the long-term safety picture is still incomplete. During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data for lemon balm — your doctor should advise whether it's right for you.
For breastfeeding, limited safety information exists, so check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Pregnancy and lactation safety data for olive leaf extract is not on file.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Solaray Olive Leaf Extract, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on CNS depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, anti-anxiety drugs, opioids, or any medication that makes you drowsy) or thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Both are Moderate-severity interactions with the lemon balm in this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may work for you if you're interested in lemon balm's possible effects on stress, mood, or cold sores — the evidence is modest but encouraging. However, if you take sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, opioids, or thyroid hormone replacement, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, because lemon balm can interact with those drugs.
Talk it over with your own healthcare provider to make sure it's a fit for your situation.

Lemon Balm
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
