What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pumpkin powder. That's it—no fillers or other ingredients listed.
Pumpkin seed powder is what you get when pumpkin seeds are ground down. It delivers the nutrients naturally present in pumpkin seeds in concentrated form.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for pumpkin seed is strongest for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can make urination difficult—where it's rated possibly effective. For other uses listed here—hair loss, bladder pain (interstitial cystitis), parasitic infections, and urinary tract infections—the evidence isn't strong enough yet to rate it one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin as a food is well tolerated by most people. When taken orally, pumpkin products are generally well tolerated, though some people report abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported. There are also two case reports of people developing hair loss or severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after eating bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash with high levels of cucurbitacin, a naturally occurring compound.
Most store-bought pumpkins won't have high cucurbitacin levels, but it's something to be aware of. For pregnancy, there isn't enough data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements to say whether they're safe, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
The same goes for breastfeeding—safety of concentrated supplements during nursing isn't well studied.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium, check with your pharmacist before starting this product. Pumpkin may increase lithium levels in your blood, and your dose might need adjustment.
No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking to support prostate health, pumpkin seed powder has some evidence behind it. Skip it if you take lithium—the interaction matters.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Check with your doctor or pharmacist first, since safety data for concentrated supplements is limited.
Otherwise, it's generally well tolerated.
