PEA shows possibly effective evidence for osteoarthritis. For spinal cord injury, the evidence leans toward possibly ineffective.
For carpal tunnel syndrome, migraine headache, autism spectrum disorder, and cannabis use disorder, there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
PEA is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effect when taken by mouth is nausea, which appears rarely and is mild.
If you apply a topical form (a lotion), about 13% of people with dry skin reported stinging, scaling, reddening, or worsened itching — but these happened no more often than with a plain lotion base. Do not use PEA during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
