HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Passion Flower 400 mg by Maui Medicinal
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Partial disclosure
Passion Flower 400 mg contains 2 active ingredients: Passion Flower and wildcrafted Passion Flower. Both deliver the herb's active constituents, including flavonoids like apigenin and vitexin, which are responsible for its effects on sleep and anxiety.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable material.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Passion Flower is rated Possibly Effective for insomnia and for easing anxiety before medical procedures or stressful events. There isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works for ADHD or to help people taper off benzodiazepines (a type of anti-anxiety medication), so those uses are unproven in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Passion Flower is generally well tolerated over the short term, but drowsiness is the most common side effect—along with dizziness, confusion, and sensitivity reactions in some people. Rarely, high doses have caused nausea, vomiting, heart rhythm changes, and severe drowsiness; those cases resolved once the herb was stopped.
Passion Flower safety data in pregnancy is incomplete, so it's best avoided then due to possible effects on the uterus. There isn't enough information to know it's safe while breastfeeding, so it's advisable to skip it during that time too.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on sedatives, tranquilizers, sleep aids, or benzodiazepines—Passion Flower can add to their effects. Also mention any medications metabolized by your liver, as the herb may theoretically affect how your body processes them.
The interaction data we have is theoretical for some of these; your pharmacist can tell you whether your specific drugs are affected.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glancePartially disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Passion Flower may help with sleep and pre-procedure anxiety, and most people tolerate it without trouble. If you take sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, or any chronic prescription drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—the interaction with depressants is real.
Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Passion Flower 400 mg by Maui Medicinal Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Passion Flower 400 mg by Maui Medicinal does interact with medications.
The main concern is with sedative drugs (CNS depressants)—passion flower has documented sedative effects of its own, and combining it with medications like benzodiazepines or sleep aids can add to their drowsiness and side effects. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The product may also affect how your body processes certain medications. Passion flower can theoretically reduce how well your body absorbs drugs called OATP substrates (affecting a range of medications), and it may decrease the effectiveness of drugs metabolized through the CYP3A4 pathway.
Both of these are Minor severity interactions based on the evidence we hold.
Altogether, these interactions span 837 individual medications. If you take any prescription or over-the-counter drugs—especially sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, sleep aids, or any chronic medication—run them through the checker below before you start this product.

For each ingredient in Passion Flower 400 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Passion Flower
Cns Depressants
Concomitant use of passion flower with sedative drugs might cause additive effects and side effects.
Research in animals and humans shows that passion flower has sedative effects which can be additive when used with sedative medications like lorazepam.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Theoretically, passion flower might reduce the bioavailability of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the passion flower constituents apigenin and vitexin inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2. This inhibition may be dose-dependent. One specific high-flavonoid passion flower extract (Valverde) seems to inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2, while another extract with a lower flavonoid concentration (Arkocaps) shows less potent inhibition. OATPs are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds into the body; however, the specific activities of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 are not well characterized.
