HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pau D'Arco by Hawaii Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This liquid contains one active ingredient: pau d'arco bark extract in dry form. Pau d'arco comes from the inner bark of a South American tree and has been used traditionally for various purposes, though the evidence for most of those uses isn't well established in clinical research.
The product also contains alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to preserve and deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for pau d'arco isn't established in the data we hold. Our monograph notes insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for cancer, peptic ulcers, wound healing, and dysmenorrhea — the conditions it's traditionally promoted for.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work, but rather that rigorous clinical trials haven't confirmed a benefit yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pau d'arco is generally well tolerated at lower doses, but human safety data is limited. At higher doses — specifically when the lapachol constituent exceeds 1.5 grams daily — it may cause anemia, bleeding risk, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
During pregnancy, the safety data advises against it due to possible harm to the developing baby. There isn't enough information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — including prescription anticoagulants like warfarin, apixaban, or rivaroxaban, and over-the-counter aspirin or NSAIDs used long-term for clotting prevention. Pau d'arco may increase your bleeding risk when combined with these medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pau d'Arco may be considered by people interested in traditional herbal remedies, but the clinical evidence for its benefit isn't established. If you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet medications, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the bleeding risk is a real concern.
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider to decide if it's right for you.
