HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Peppermint Spirits by Thymely Solutions
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Peppermint Spirits contains two active ingredients: peppermint essential oil and chlorophyll. Peppermint essential oil is a concentrated extract used to ease symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and indigestion.
Chlorophyll is the compound that gives plants their green color and is included in this formulation as a supplement ingredient. The product also contains vegetable glycerin and deionized water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Peppermint essential oil is likely effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and possibly effective for indigestion, nausea from chemotherapy, spasms during barium enemas, and side effects from endoscopy procedures. Chlorophyll, however, has insufficient evidence in our data to establish effectiveness for genital herpes, wound healing, shingles, skin cancer, or pancreatitis—these uses remain unproven.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Peppermint oil taken by mouth is generally well tolerated, though some people report abdominal pain, belching, diarrhea, dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, or vomiting. Rarely, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis (sudden severe swelling of lips, tongue, and throat with breathing difficulty) have been reported.
In large amounts, peppermint oil may cause chemical burns in the mouth and throat. Chlorophyll is also generally well tolerated in short-term use, though photosensitization (increased sun sensitivity) and rare cases of pseudoporphyria (blistering) have occurred.
Peppermint essential oil is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, but chlorophyll safety data in pregnancy and breastfeeding are not established—the facts advise against use in pregnancy and caution in breastfeeding unless your doctor approves.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you use any of the following: heart medications or other drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4, CYP2C19, or CYP2C9 enzyme systems (Moderate severity); cyclosporine or other immunosuppressants (Moderate); methotrexate (Moderate); or drugs that increase sun sensitivity (Moderate). Although peppermint may also theoretically affect drugs processed by CYP1A2, this effect was not confirmed in a clinical trial (Minor severity).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Peppermint Spirits may help with irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion, but the peppermint essential oil and chlorophyll it contains could interact with many medications, especially heart drugs, immunosuppressants, methotrexate, and sun-sensitizing drugs. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take any prescription medications, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product—they can review your specific medications and help you decide whether it's right for you.

Peppermint Spirits by Thymely Solutions Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Peppermint Spirits by Thymely Solutions contains peppermint essential oil and chlorophyll, both of which interact with medications.
The most serious concern is peppermint's theoretical effect on drugs processed by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme system—in one clinical study, peppermint oil raised blood levels of felodipine (a heart medication), which could increase its effects and side effects.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Peppermint may also increase levels of other drugs broken down by your liver's CYP2C19 and CYP2C9 enzyme systems (Moderate severity for both), as well as cyclosporine, an immunosuppressant medication. These interactions have been shown in lab and animal studies but haven't yet been reported in people taking peppermint by mouth.
Additionally, peppermint theoretically affects CYP1A2 substrates, though a clinical trial of peppermint tea did not show this effect on caffeine metabolism (Minor severity).
Chlorophyll carries two documented interactions: it may increase levels and effects of methotrexate (a cancer and autoimmune medication) by slowing its clearance from your body, and it can add to the photosensitizing effects of drugs that make your skin more sensitive to sun damage. Altogether, these interactions span 989 individual medications.
Before you start this product, check all your prescription and over-the-counter medications with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you take heart drugs, immunosuppressants, cancer medications, or drugs that increase sun sensitivity.

For each ingredient in Peppermint Spirits with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Peppermint essential Oil
Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
Theoretically, peppermint oil might increase the levels and adverse effects of cyclosporine.
In animal research, peppermint oil inhibits cyclosporine metabolism and increases cyclosporine levels. Inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) may be partially responsible for this interaction. An interaction between peppermint oil and cyclosporine has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that peppermint oil inhibits CYP2C19. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that peppermint oil inhibits CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that a single dose of peppermint oil 600 mg inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes and increases the AUC of felodipine, a CYP3A4 substrate. However, in vitro research suggests that peppermint oil only inhibits CYP3A4 at very high concentrations.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro and animal research shows that peppermint oil and peppermint leaf inhibit CYP1A2. However, in clinical research, peppermint tea did not significantly affect the metabolism of caffeine, a CYP1A2 substrate. It is possible that the 6-day duration of treatment may have been too short to identify a difference.
Chlorophyll
Methotrexate (Trexall, Others)
Theoretically, chlorophyll may reduce the clearance of methotrexate.
In one case report, a 54-year-old male developed delayed clearance of intravenous high-dose methotrexate with concomitant use of chlorophyll. When chlorophyll was stopped 2 days prior to methotrexate treatment, methotrexate clearance was unaffected.
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyll with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. In two case reports, pseudoporphyria developed after oral intake of chlorophyll. Theoretically, concomitant use with other photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate this effect.
