PhosChol contains 3 active ingredients: phosphatidylcholine (a compound made of choline and fatty acids that supports cell membranes), monounsaturated fat, and polyunsaturated fat. The capsule also holds several inactive ingredients — gelatin, glycerin, safflower oil, medium chain triglyceride, and a few preservatives and antioxidants — that help deliver and protect the formula.

Phosphatidylcholine is possibly effective for ulcerative colitis (a type of inflammatory bowel disease). For nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, Alzheimer disease, and anxiety, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether it works.

Phosphatidylcholine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are altered taste, bloating, diarrhea, itching, nausea, sweating, and vomiting — usually mild.
Very high doses (30 grams daily or more) are more likely to cause digestive upset and diarrhea. During pregnancy, your body needs choline, but the safety of taking a phosphatidylcholine supplement beyond what's in food has not been well studied — talk with your doctor before using it.
