Phytocidal Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Phytocidal against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Phytocidal contains four active botanical extracts. Cat's claw bark is traditionally used for immune support; Japanese knotweed root contains resveratrol and other compounds; andrographis leaf is used in traditional medicine for inflammation and immune function; and sweet wormwood extract has been studied for various digestive and inflammatory conditions.
The product also contains inactive ingredients—hypromellose, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide—which are standard capsule components.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supporting these ingredients is limited. Cat's claw, Japanese knotweed, and sweet wormwood all lack sufficient reliable evidence to rate their effectiveness for their claimed uses.
Andrographis shows possibly effective evidence for ulcerative colitis, tonsillopharyngitis (sore throat from infection), and osteoarthritis, but for the other conditions listed here, the data is insufficient to confirm whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Cat's claw is generally well tolerated short-term but long-term safety isn't well studied. In one clinical trial, anemia occurred in 12% of patients, though those patients had advanced cancer and received no placebo—so it's unclear whether cat's claw was responsible.
Several case reports link cat's claw to acute kidney injury; one patient's kidney function recovered after stopping it. Andrographis is often well tolerated but can cause abdominal discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, rash, and rarely severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis.
Wormwood contains thujone, a neurotoxin; the oil can cause muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and in rare cases acute kidney damage and seizures. Long-term use increases the risk of serious neurological effects including hallucinations, tremors, and brain damage.
Japanese knotweed's emodin content may cause digestive upset.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications against this product if you take antiviral drugs for COVID-19 (Paxlovid), antihypertensives or calcium channel blockers for blood pressure, blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs, immunosuppressants, seizure medications (anticonvulsants), or any drugs metabolized by liver pathways CYP3A4, CYP1A2, CYP2C19, or CYP2E1—which includes many common pain relievers, statins, and other medications. Use the tool below to check your exact prescriptions before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
These four herbal extracts interact with a large number of medications across multiple drug classes, and the most serious concern is their potential to reduce the effectiveness of COVID-19 antiviral treatment. Andrographis has some evidence for sore throat and certain joint conditions, but the others lack proven effectiveness.
Before you start Phytocidal, run your medications through the interaction checker on this page and discuss the results with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it's right for you.

Phytocidal by Ortho Molecular Products Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Phytocidal by Ortho Molecular Products contains four herbal extracts—cat's claw, Japanese knotweed, andrographis, and sweet wormwood—that together interact with a substantial number of medications.
The most serious concern is cat's claw's potential to reduce the effectiveness of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (Paxlovid) by speeding up how your body breaks it down; this is a Moderate-severity interaction that could undermine COVID-19 treatment.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Cat's claw may increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect of antihypertensive drugs and calcium channel blockers, raising the risk of excessively low blood pressure (hypotension). It may also interfere with blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs by increasing bleeding risk, and it could block the activity of immunosuppressants used after organ transplant or for certain autoimmune conditions.
Additionally, cat's claw may alter levels of many other medications metabolized through a liver pathway called CYP3A4.
Japanese knotweed raises drug levels through inhibition of several liver enzymes (CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP3A4, and CYP2E1), potentially increasing side effects of affected medications. It may also increase bleeding risk with blood thinners and could interfere with estrogen therapy.
Andrographis carries similar concerns: it may lower blood pressure with antihypertensives, increase bleeding with blood thinners, interfere with immunosuppressants, and alter absorption of certain pain relievers and diabetes medications. Sweet wormwood may reduce the effectiveness of seizure medications (anticonvulsants).
Altogether, these interactions span 1,095 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below to search your exact prescriptions before starting this product, and discuss the results with your doctor or pharmacist.

For each ingredient in Phytocidal with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Cat's Claw Bark Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, cat's claw may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Cat's claw contains rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline. Animal research suggests that these alkaloids can inhibit platelet aggregation. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking cat's claw with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Cat's claw contains rhynchophylline. In vitro and animal research suggests that rhynchophylline can lower blood pressure. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Calcium Channel Blockers
Theoretically, taking cat's claw with calcium channel blockers might increase the risk of hypotension.
Cat's claw contains various alkaloids, including rhynchophylline, isorhynchophylline, corynoxeine, and isocorynoxiene. Animal research suggests that these alkaloids can lower blood pressure by acting as calcium channel blockers. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, cat's claw might increase or decrease the levels and effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Cat's claw may affect the clearance of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. In vitro research shows that cat's claw can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. In one case report, a patient taking cat's claw (at an unspecified dose) experienced increased serum levels of atazanavir, ritonavir, and saquinavir, all of which are CYP3A4 substrates. Levels returned to normal 15 days after discontinuation of the cat's claw supplement, suggesting inhibition of CYP3A4 by cat's claw. In contrast, animal research suggests that rhynchophylline, an alkaloid contained in cat's claw, induces CYP3A expression and accelerates the metabolism of nirmatrelvir, the active component in the nirmatrelvir/ritonavir combination product.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, cat's claw might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
In human and laboratory research, cat's claw has been shown to have immunostimulating activity. It stimulates phagocytosis and increases respiratory cellular activity and the mobility of leukocytes. Theoretically, this could interfere with the activity of immunosuppressant medications.
Nirmatrelvir/Ritonavir (Paxlovid)
Theoretically, cat's claw may decrease the levels of nirmatrelvir.
Cat's claw contains rhynchophylline. Animal research suggests that this alkaloid induces CYP3A expression, thereby accelerating the metabolism of nirmatrelvir, the active component in the nirmatrelvir/ritonavir combination product. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Japanese Knotweed Root Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, hu zhang might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. Resveratrol seems to have antiplatelet effects.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP1A2 enzyme. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP2C19 enzyme. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP2E1 enzyme. Also, a pharmacokinetic study shows that taking resveratrol 500 mg daily for 10 days prior to taking a single dose of chlorzoxazone 250 mg increases the maximum concentration of chlorzoxazone by about 54%, the area under the curve of chlorzoxazone by about 72%, and the half-life of chlorzoxazone by about 35%. Chlorzoxazone is used as a probe drug for CYP2E1.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.
Estrogens
Theoretically, hu zhang might competitively inhibit the effects of estrogen replacement therapy.
In vitro research shows that hu zhang might have estrogenic activity.
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Theoretically, hu zhang might increase the effects and adverse effects of carbamazepine.
In animals, blood and tissue levels of carbamazepine were increased when given in combination with hu zhang. It is thought that increased levels of carbamazepine are due to cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) inhibition. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Andrographis Leaf Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, andrographis might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal and laboratory studies suggest that andrographis has antiplatelet effects.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, andrographis might increase the risk of hypotension when used with antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research suggests that andrographis has hypotensive effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, andrographis might interfere with the effects of immunosuppressive drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that andrographolide has immunostimulant activity.
Celecoxib (Celebrex)
Theoretically, andrographis extract might increase the maximum concentration and time to peak concentration of celecoxib. The clinical significance of these changes is unclear.
Animal research suggests that andrographis extract taken orally increases the maximum concentration and time to peak concentration of celecoxib but does not appear to impact the area under the curve.
Etoricoxib (Arcoxia)
Theoretically, andrographis might decrease the absorption of etoricoxib, although the clinical significance is unclear.
Animal research shows that andrographis extract, or the constituent andrographolide, taken orally with etoricoxib decreases the bioavailability of etoricoxib. However, this reduced bioavailability is not correlated with a reduction in the anti-inflammatory effects of etoricoxib in arthritic mice models. The clinical significance of this interaction is unclear.
Glipizide (Glucotrol)
Theoretically, andrographis extract might increase the maximum concentration and area under the curve of glipizide; however, opposite effects are seen with the constituent, andrographolide. The clinical significance of this interaction is unclear.
Animal research suggests that andrographis extract taken orally with glipizide in diabetes-induced rats increases the maximum concentration and area under the curve of glipizide. However, the opposite effect is seen with the constituent, andrographolide, in which the maximum concentration and area under the curve are decreased when taken with glipizide.
Sweet Wormwood Extract
Anticonvulsants
Theoretically, taking wormwood might interfere with the effects of anticonvulsant drugs.
Thujone, a constituent of wormwood, has convulsant effects.
