Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: potassium and iodine. Potassium is an electrolyte your body needs for muscle and heart function.
Iodine is essential for making thyroid hormone and regulating metabolism. The product contains no inactive fillers listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The data we hold covers iodine's effectiveness, not potassium's. Iodine is likely effective for protecting your thyroid against radiation exposure and for correcting iodine deficiency.
It's possibly effective for oral mucositis (mouth sores) and periodontitis (gum disease), though the evidence for those uses is less established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Potassium is generally well tolerated when eaten as food, but supplements can build up to dangerous levels in your blood, especially if you have kidney disease — that's why they need medical oversight. The most common side effects are stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, and gas.
In rare cases, too much potassium can cause heart rhythm problems, low blood pressure, or confusion. Iodine is well tolerated in normal dietary amounts, but high doses can cause thyroid problems — either overactive or underactive thyroid, headache, metallic taste, or in rare cases, severe allergic reactions.
In pregnancy, adequate iodine is important, but only take the amount your doctor advises. During breastfeeding, excess iodine can pass into your milk, so follow your doctor's guidance.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you're on potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or angiotensin receptor blockers (blood pressure and heart medications), because potassium can accumulate to dangerous levels. Also double-check if you take lithium, antithyroid drugs, or amiodarone, since iodine can interfere with thyroid function or combine with these drugs in ways that need monitoring.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is for correcting iodine deficiency or protecting your thyroid in radiation exposure, and potassium supplementation requires medical supervision because of its interactions with blood pressure and heart medications. If you take a diuretic, ACE inhibitor, ARB, lithium, thyroid medication, or amiodarone, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — don't take this on your own.

Potassium Iodate by PureBulk.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Potassium Iodate by PureBulk.com has interactions documented for both its active ingredients.
Through its potassium and iodine content, this product can interact with blood pressure medications and thyroid-related drugs. The most serious concerns are with potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills that hold potassium), ACE inhibitors, and angiotensin receptor blockers — all can raise your blood potassium to dangerous levels when combined with potassium supplements, a condition called hyperkalemia that can cause heart rhythm problems.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Iodine interactions center on thyroid function. If you take lithium (a mood stabilizer), antithyroid drugs, or amiodarone (a heart rhythm medication), adding iodine can either block thyroid function or, in amiodarone's case, push iodine levels too high because that drug itself contains a lot of iodine.
Altogether, these interactions span 69 individual medications. Before you start this product, run your exact prescriptions through the search tool on this page — especially if you take any blood pressure or heart medication, thyroid drugs, or lithium.

For each ingredient in Potassium Iodate with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Potassium
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Using ACEIs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ACEIs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)
Using ARBs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ARBs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Concomitant use increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Using potassium-sparing diuretics with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Iodine
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
