Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: prostate and urinary tract health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Overactive bladder, urinary symptoms, male urinary health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Pumpkin is rated "Possibly Effective" for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Pumpkin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Overactive bladder.

Pumpkin seed oil is possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—enlarged prostate that can cause urinary symptoms. For other uses we checked—male-pattern baldness, bladder inflammation, intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections—the evidence is insufficient to rate whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pumpkin seed oil is generally well tolerated as a concentrated supplement in adults. The most common side effects in trials are mild: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported. There are also two case reports of hair loss and severe nausea and vomiting after consuming bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash with high levels of cucurbitacin, a naturally occurring compound—this is uncommon in standard supplements but worth knowing.

For pregnancy, there isn't enough data to know whether this concentrated supplement is safe; eating pumpkin as food is fine, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a seed-oil supplement while pregnant. The same applies to breastfeeding—safety of the concentrated supplement hasn't been well studied.

Pumpkin Seed Oil 1000 mg by Puritan's Pride: Common Questions

Does Pumpkin Seed Oil 1000 mg by Puritan's Pride interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Pumpkin Seed Oil 1000 mg has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Pumpkin Seed Oil 1000 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help my enlarged prostate?
Pumpkin seed oil is possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), meaning there's some evidence it may help, but it's not definitive. Talk with your doctor about whether it's right for you and how it fits with any other treatments you're on.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant?
There isn't enough data on concentrated pumpkin seed-oil supplements during pregnancy to know either way. Eating pumpkin as food is fine, but check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this supplement while pregnant—they can give you personalized advice based on your situation.
What side effects should I watch for?
Most people tolerate it well. The most common side effects are mild: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Rarely, severe allergic reaction can occur. Bitter-tasting pumpkin with high levels of a natural compound called cucurbitacin has caused hair loss and severe nausea in a couple of case reports, though this is uncommon.
Is this made from the same pumpkin I cook with?
It's extracted and concentrated pumpkin seed oil, so it's much stronger than eating pumpkin as food. That's why the safety data for food pumpkin and concentrated supplements differ—we have less long-term data on the concentrated form.
