Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: French Maritime Pine Extract, also called Pycnogenol, at 50 mg per capsule. It's a plant-derived compound that may help support joint health and circulation.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — plant fiber, cellulose, water, and ascorbyl palmitate — which are binding and stabilizing agents with no active role.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Maritime pine bark extract is rated possibly effective for osteoarthritis and for chronic venous insufficiency — a condition where blood doesn't return efficiently from your legs. It's also rated possibly effective for asthma.
For high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective, so this isn't the supplement to reach for if that's your goal.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
In trials, maritime pine bark extract has been generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are stomach upset, dizziness, and vertigo — a spinning sensation.
Headache has been reported in one trial. Rare reports exist of chest pain and worsening heart failure in patients with existing heart disease, but it's unclear whether the supplement caused these or the underlying condition did.
Long-term safety hasn't been fully studied. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so talk to your doctor or pharmacist if either applies to you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — the supplement may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you're on diabetes medications, since maritime pine bark may lower blood sugar further.
If you take immunosuppressants, let your pharmacist know as well.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have osteoarthritis, chronic leg swelling, or asthma and take no blood thinners or diabetes drugs, maritime pine bark extract is worth discussing with your pharmacist. Anyone on anticoagulants, antiplatelets, diabetes medications, or immunosuppressants should check their exact drugs first — the interaction risk is real.
If you have heart disease, mention it before starting.
