Quina bark extract carries real safety concerns you should know about. The most serious: quinine (one of its alkaloids) has been linked to rare but sometimes fatal blood disorders, including low platelet counts, clotting disorders, and hemolytic anemia with kidney failure.

Early warning signs include bleeding from the gums, nose, or GI tract, easy bruising, and small red spots on the skin. The extract can also cause a rhythm disorder called cinchonism and potentially dangerous changes to your heart's electrical activity.

More common side effects from oral use are diarrhea, nausea, ringing ears, and vomiting—especially with prolonged high doses. If you're pregnant, the safety data advises against this product because quinine may harm the pregnancy.

If you're breastfeeding, there isn't enough data to say it's safe; quinine can pass to your baby, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it's right for you.

Theoretically, this may increase the amount of quinidine, a constituent of cinchona, reabsorbed in the renal tubules and increase the risk of quinidine toxicity.
