HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Raw Multi-Glandular For Women by Swanson Premium Brand
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains 5 raw glandular tissues sourced from animal organs: heart, kidney, liver, ovary, and uterus. The liver extract is the only ingredient we hold detailed data for.
The product also contains gelatin as an inactive ingredient to form the capsule.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold rates liver extract as possibly ineffective for chronic fatigue syndrome. For other uses like hepatitis C, the data is too limited to say either way.
This product is marketed as a glandular supplement, but we have no effectiveness information on file for the other raw tissues it contains.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
No adverse reactions to this product have been reported in the data we hold. However, a thorough safety study hasn't been conducted.
Liver extract comes with a few cautions: it can deliver high levels of vitamin A and iron, which may be concerning for some people. Liver products are sourced from animal livers obtained at slaughterhouses, raising concerns about possible contamination from sick or diseased animals, or (in rare cases) from countries where bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or "mad cow disease") has been documented.
No cases of BSE transmission from liver extract to humans have been reported so far. Pregnancy and lactation safety data on file is incomplete.
Because liver extract can contain very high vitamin A, which may harm a developing baby, the evidence advises against use in pregnancy unless your doctor advises otherwise. Safety during breastfeeding hasn't been well studied — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any blood thinner, flag this product — the liver extract may contain vitamin K and could affect how your medication works. Also check before combining it with iron supplements or iron-containing medications.
Use the search tool on this page to verify your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take warfarin or iron supplements, check with your pharmacist before starting this product. The liver extract in it carries theoretical interactions with both, though neither has been directly proven in people.
Pregnant women should avoid it due to vitamin A concerns. Otherwise, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about whether this glandular supplement makes sense for your situation.

Raw Multi-Glandular For Women by Swanson Premium Brand Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson Premium Brand Raw Multi-Glandular For Women contains liver extract, which carries two documented interactions with medications.
The more serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner — liver extract may contain small amounts of vitamin K, which could theoretically reduce warfarin's effect and lower your INR (a measure of blood thinning). That said, this hasn't been directly studied in people, so the real-world risk remains unclear.

The product may also interact with iron supplements or iron-containing medications. Liver extract contains heme iron, so adding it to your iron intake could increase your total iron load and raise the risk of stomach upset or iron buildup in your body — especially if you take high doses, use it long-term, or have a condition like hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder).
Three other ingredients in this product — raw heart, kidney, ovarian, and uterus tissue — we could not check for interactions; no interaction data is on file for them. Altogether, these interactions span 3 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions are affected.

raw Liver Tissue
Iron
Liver extract can contain heme iron. Taking liver extract with iron-containing medications or supplements may increase total iron intake and could increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects or excessive iron accumulation. The risk is greater with high doses, prolonged use, or in individuals with hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder. Review the iron content of the liver extract and the total elemental iron dose. Avoid unnecessary duplicate iron supplementation and consider monitoring ferritin and transferrin saturation when clinically appropriate.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Liver extract products may contain small and variable amounts of vitamin K. Theoretically, starting, stopping, or substantially changing the amount of liver extract used could reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and lower the INR. However, this interaction has not been directly studied or reported in humans, and the vitamin K content of liver extract products is generally not standardized. Consider monitoring the INR after a meaningful change in liver extract use.
