Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Red Raspberry product and its label doesn't state a use — see Red Raspberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence on red raspberry for specific health claims isn't established in our data. We hold ratings of insufficient reliable evidence for aging skin, heart disease, respiratory infections, congestive heart failure, and diabetes—meaning there isn't enough high-quality research yet to say whether it works for these purposes.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Red raspberry is generally well tolerated by most adults when taken by mouth, though the overall safety evidence is limited. The most common side effects are diarrhea, gastrointestinal upset, and stomach pain, though these don't typically occur at standard doses.

One case of occupational asthma from inhaling raspberry powder has been reported. For pregnancy, the safety data shows mixed ratings—some evidence suggests it's likely safe, some suggests possibly safe, and some flags it as likely unsafe—so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether to use it during pregnancy.

Not enough reliable information exists to confirm safety while breastfeeding; discuss this with your healthcare provider if you're nursing.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Insulin

Red raspberry leaf might reduce glucose levels in patients being treated with insulin.
In one case report, a 38-year-old patient with gestational diabetes, whose blood glucose was being controlled with medical nutrition therapy and insulin, developed hypoglycemia after consuming two servings of raspberry leaf tea daily for 3 days beginning at 32 weeks' gestation. The patient required an insulin dose reduction. The hypoglycemia was considered to be probably related to use of red raspberry leaf tea.
