Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: sassafras root bark extract, in dry form. Sassafras has been used traditionally, though safety data show serious concerns (covered below).
The liquid also contains glycerin and water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The product facts we hold don't include effectiveness ratings for sassafras. We can't tell you whether it works for any particular purpose based on the data available to us.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sassafras carries significant safety warnings. The FDA has banned it from food because it contains safrole, a compound linked to cancer and liver damage.
The safety data advises against using it altogether—sassafras is considered unsafe in medicinal amounts, and any potential benefit likely doesn't outweigh the toxicity risk. Oral use can cause sweating, hot flashes, and in high doses, shakes, vomiting, fast heart rate, and liver cancer.
Large amounts of sassafras oil have caused hallucinations lasting several days, and in extreme cases, death. Topical use can trigger a rash.
The safety data advises against sassafras during pregnancy and breastfeeding because safrole is toxic to a developing baby and can pass into breast milk. There isn't enough safety data to know how this product might affect you personally—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before considering it, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning pregnancy.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you take CNS depressants (sedating medications like sleeping pills or tranquilizers) or CYP1A2 inducers like omeprazole. Sassafras may increase sedation or, theoretically, increase the toxicity of its active compound in the presence of certain medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sassafras is considered unsafe for medicinal use by safety standards, and the FDA has banned its food use due to cancer and liver toxicity risk. If you're considering this product, it's important to discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist first, particularly if you take sedating medications or stomach acid reducers, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Sassafras Alcohol Free by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sassafras Alcohol Free by Hawaii Pharm contains sassafras root bark extract, which has documented interactions with two major drug categories.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (sedating medications)—sassafras may add to their sedative effects and cause extra drowsiness or impaired alertness.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The product also interacts with CYP1A2 inducers, a group of medications that may theoretically increase the toxicity of safrole, sassafras's active compound. Omeprazole (Prilosec), a common stomach acid reducer, is one example; however, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans, and it remains unclear whether CYP1A2 inducers actually raise sassafras toxicity in real use.
Altogether, these interactions span 275 individual medications. Before you take this product, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page—especially if you take sedating drugs or any CYP1A2 inducer.
