HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Scullcap by TerraVita
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Scullcap Glycerite Liquid Extract. The liquid formula also includes glycerin as an inactive ingredient (a sweetener and preservative in the base).
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence for scullcap is limited. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for epilepsy, stress, stroke, spasticity, contact dermatitis, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
That means research hasn't yet established whether it actually works for these uses — not that it doesn't work, just that we don't have the data to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Scullcap is often used short-term, but evidence is limited and product quality varies, so use it with care. The most common side effects reported are cognitive impairment, digestive disturbances, and sedation.
Mild digestive upset was noted in around 9% of people taking a higher dose (350 mg three times daily) over 2 weeks. A single 100 mg dose appears unlikely to cause CNS side effects, but 200 mg or higher might cause sedation and difficulty thinking.
Scullcap is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding because there isn't enough safety data. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining this product with CNS depressants — that includes sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, some antidepressants, opioid pain relievers, and alcohol. The risk is Moderate sedation and reduced mental clarity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Scullcap may be worth considering if you're exploring herbal options for stress or sleep, but remember the evidence for what it actually does is still insufficient. The main caution is sedation and cognitive impairment, especially if you're also taking sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, opioids, or other CNS depressants.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it fits your situation and whether it's safe to combine with anything else you're taking.
