Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient, sea buckthorn powder, made from the sea buckthorn plant. The facts we hold do not break down its specific compounds or explain how they work in the body.
No inactive ingredients are listed for this product in our data.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For burns, sea buckthorn is rated Possibly Effective. For atopic dermatitis (eczema), it is rated Possibly Ineffective.
For dyslipidemia (abnormal blood fats), aging skin, and cancer, there is insufficient reliable evidence to rate it. These ratings reflect the research we hold, and the evidence for many of its uses is not yet established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sea buckthorn is generally well tolerated as a food, but the safety of supplement use has not been fully studied. Food amounts are likely fine, while supplement doses are not well studied, so your doctor should guide you on use.
High oral doses may cause yellow staining of the skin. One case of generalized yellow skin was reported in a patient who ate 100 grams daily for 6 months.
Topically, the oil has been linked to dryness, irritation, redness, and rash, with rash seen in a small share of patients in one clinical study. Intravaginal use has rarely caused severe burning and itching.
Our data does not include pregnancy information for this product, and there is not enough reliable safety data on use while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your own situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check blood pressure medicines (antihypertensive drugs) first, rated Moderate, since sea buckthorn may add to their blood pressure lowering effect. Next, check blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs, also rated Moderate, because of the possible increase in bleeding risk.
Use the search tool on this page to look up your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you are looking into sea buckthorn for burns, the research rates it as possibly effective, though the evidence is limited. If you take blood pressure medicines or blood thinners, or have bleeding concerns, be careful and talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or using high doses should also check with their own healthcare provider first.
