Here's the simple version: dabigatran (Pradaxa) is already a strong blood thinner, and sea buckthorn appears to make your platelets (the cells that help form clots) a little less sticky. Stacking the two could nudge your bleeding risk a bit higher. With dabigatran that might show up as easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood that takes longer to stop after a small cut.

Keep this in perspective. The concern here is mostly theoretical, and eating sea buckthorn berries or a splash of the juice is unlikely to matter. Concentrated capsules or extracts are where I'd be more cautious. Since dabigatran leaves little room for error, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a supplement rather than changing anything on your own.

Sea buckthorn is a berry-bearing shrub rich in vitamins, carotenoids, and fatty acids that people use for skin, eye, digestive, and heart health. Early research is promising for a few uses like dry skin and dry eye, but most claims are not yet proven. It is generally well tolerated as a food, but talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated supplements.

About Dabigatran

What Is Dabigatran Used For?

Brand names: Pradaxa, Pradax

Dabigatran etexilate capsules are approved for adults to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism (blood clots traveling through the body) in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). Capsules are also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in a deep vein, usually the leg) and pulmonary embolism (PE — a clot in the lungs), to prevent those clots from coming back, and to prevent DVT and PE in adults who have had hip replacement surgery.

For children, the capsule form is approved for treating VTE (venous thromboembolism — blood clots in veins) and reducing recurrence in patients aged 8 to under 18. Pradaxa Oral Pellets are approved specifically for children aged 3 months to under 12 years for the same treatment and recurrence-prevention purposes.
