American ginseng in this product is rated possibly effective for upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) — the common colds and sinus infections that hit your nose and throat. For anemia of chronic disease and breast cancer, the evidence we hold is insufficient to say whether it works.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Potassium is generally well tolerated from food, but supplements can cause dangerously high blood levels in some people, especially those with kidney disease. Oral potassium may cause stomach pain, belching, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and vomiting; rare serious effects include heart arrhythmia, heart block, low blood pressure, and confusion.
American ginseng is generally well tolerated short-term in healthy adults but has limited long-term safety data, and headache has been reported. Yucca is considered low-risk in food amounts, but supplement safety is not well studied.
Chaparral is regarded as unsafe — it carries a serious risk of liver and kidney damage, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure requiring transplant; cases of severe toxicity have been documented. Given chaparral's safety profile, this product is not recommended.

DIRECTIONS FOR NUTRITIONAL USE: 1-2 capsules up to twice a day for 2-8 weeks, or as directed. Then, take as needed for maintenance. Increase the amount of liquids you drink each day while taking this product.

Chaparral
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, chaparral might have additive adverse effects on the liver when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
Ginseng
Warfarin (Coumadin)
American ginseng seems to decrease the effectiveness of warfarin therapy.
Healthy patients receiving warfarin 5 mg daily, who also take American ginseng 1 gram twice daily, seem to have a significantly reduced international normalized ratio (INR).
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking American ginseng with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
American ginseng seems to lower postprandial blood glucose. Theoretically, concomitant use with antidiabetes drugs might enhance blood glucose lowering effects and possibly cause hypoglycemia.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, American ginseng use might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
American ginseng seems to stimulate immune function. Theoretically, American ginseng might decrease the effectiveness of immunosuppressant drugs.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, American ginseng can interfere with MAOI therapy.
There is one case report of insomnia, headache, and tremors when an unspecified ginseng product was used with phenelzine (Nardil), an MAOI. There is also one case report of hypomania when an unspecified ginseng product was used with phenelzine. Theoretically, American ginseng may interfere with MAOI therapy.
Potassium Phosphate
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Using ACEIs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ACEIs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)
Using ARBs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ARBs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Concomitant use increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Using potassium-sparing diuretics with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
