Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Serretia contains one active ingredient: serrapeptase, an enzyme extracted from the bacterium Serratia marcescens. The product delivers 250,000 SPUs (serrapeptase protease units) per capsule.

The only other ingredient listed is cellulose, an inactive filler.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Serrapeptase's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: break down mucus and promote normal inflammatory response.
  • We looked for evidence on: Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Chronic bronchitis, Laryngitis, Otitis media, Pharyngitis — and 4 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Serrapeptase is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Chronic bronchitis (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Serrapeptase is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Asthma, Otitis media, Pharyngitis, Rhinosinusitis, and more.

The evidence for serrapeptase is limited. For chronic bronchitis, asthma, atherosclerosis, back pain, and osteoporosis—conditions it's often marketed for—we don't have reliable evidence to rate whether it actually works.

That doesn't mean it's ineffective; it means the research to prove it either way hasn't been done or isn't solid enough for us to rely on.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Serrapeptase is generally well tolerated in short-term use. The most common side effects people report are epigastric pain (upper stomach discomfort), general gastrointestinal upset, and nausea—though these occur at about the same rate as placebo in trials.

A rare serious side effect, bullous pemphigoid (a blistering skin condition), has been reported. Long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so we don't know what happens if you take it for months or years.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough reliable information to know it's safe. If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this supplement.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Serrapeptase.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking Serretia, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs—such as warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or heparin. Serrapeptase may increase your risk of bleeding or bruising when combined with these medications.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Serretia is an enzyme supplement with limited evidence for the conditions it's marketed for. The main concern is its potential to increase bleeding risk if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medications.

If you're on any blood-thinning drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting. For everyone else, short-term use appears generally tolerated, though long-term safety data is sparse.

How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Serretia 250,000 SPUs contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take Serretia if I'm on aspirin or another blood thinner?
You need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Serrapeptase may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs like aspirin, warfarin, and clopidogrel. Your prescriber can weigh the benefit against the risk for your situation.
Is Serretia safe to take long-term?

What side effects does Serretia cause?
Most people who experience side effects report mild stomach discomfort, upset stomach, or nausea—at about the same rate as placebo. Rarely, a blistering skin condition called bullous pemphigoid has been reported. If you develop unusual symptoms, stop and tell your pharmacist or doctor.
Does Serretia actually work for back pain or chronic bronchitis?
The evidence isn't solid enough to say. We don't have reliable studies showing whether serrapeptase works for back pain, chronic bronchitis, asthma, atherosclerosis, or osteoporosis. If you're considering it for one of those conditions, ask your doctor what the science actually supports.
