Motherwort appears to be generally well tolerated by mouth in the short term, though human safety data overall are limited. The most common side effects from oral use are diarrhea and stomach irritation.

At doses above 3 grams, it can trigger uterine bleeding. The product should be avoided in pregnancy — motherwort has been traditionally thought to stimulate the uterus.

There isn't enough safety information for breastfeeding either, so it's best to avoid it then too. Topically, it can cause contact dermatitis or photosensitivity reactions (increased sun sensitivity).
