HelloPharmacist Scorecard of SP Green Food by SP Standard Process
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
SP Green Food contains 6 ingredients in a proprietary blend, including kale, Brussels sprouts, alfalfa aerial parts juice and powder, buckwheat aerial parts juice and powder, buckwheat, and barley aerial parts juice and powder. These are whole-food concentrates — essentially dehydrated plant material — rather than isolated extracts.
The inactive ingredients are cellulose, water, and calcium stearate.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence in our data is limited for most of the ingredients in this blend. Barley aerial parts are rated likely effective for high cholesterol and heart disease — it has solid research backing.
For the other ingredients — kale, alfalfa, buckwheat, and Brussels sprouts — the evidence either isn't established or is insufficient to rate their effect on the conditions studied (diabetes, menopausal symptoms, bowel inflammation, and others). That doesn't mean they don't work; it means the research we hold doesn't support a claim yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Kale is a common food and is generally well tolerated. Buckwheat is also well tolerated as a food, though allergic reactions — ranging from skin rash to anaphylaxis — can happen in some people.
Barley is safe for most people but contains gluten and can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Alfalfa, however, carries more caution: it commonly causes digestive side effects like bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.
Rarely, chronic use has been linked to a lupus-like syndrome, and dermatitis (skin inflammation) has been reported. Because alfalfa has estrogen-like activity, the safety data advises against it in supplement amounts during pregnancy; it's also not well studied while breastfeeding.
For kale, buckwheat, and barley, there isn't enough data on concentrated supplement doses in pregnancy and lactation — talk with your provider about whether this product is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Check before starting if you take warfarin or other blood thinners — alfalfa may reduce their effect (Major). Also double-check if you're on birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, diabetes medications, immunosuppressive drugs, photosensitizing medications, or the antiparasitic triclabendazole (Moderate for all).
Altogether, these interactions span 578 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a whole-food green blend best suited for people who tolerate cruciferous vegetables and aren't taking warfarin or certain other medications. If you're on any prescription drugs — especially blood thinners, birth control, diabetes meds, immunosuppressants, or hormone therapy — check with us first.
The main evidence is for barley's effect on cholesterol and heart health; the other ingredients are foods without established clinical claims in our data.

SP Green Food by SP Standard Process Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
SP Green Food by Standard Process contains several whole-food ingredients, and one of them — alfalfa — does interact with a number of medications.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner (anticoagulant): alfalfa is high in vitamin K, which can reduce warfarin's ability to thin your blood. This is a Major interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Alfalfa also has Moderate interactions with several other drug types. It may interfere with birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy because it contains plant compounds with estrogen-like effects.
It could theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you take diabetes medications, and it may reduce the effectiveness of drugs that suppress the immune system. Additionally, if you take photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sun), alfalfa might add to that effect.
Barley aerial parts in this product interact with one antiparasitic drug, triclabendazole (Egaten), at Moderate severity — animal data suggest barley may reduce how well your body absorbs it, though this hasn't been proven in humans.
We could not check Brussels Sprouts because we hold no data for it. Kale and buckwheat (both forms) have no interactions documented in our data, though that's not a guarantee none exist.

Alfalfa Aerial Parts Juice, Powder
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, alfalfa might reduce the anticoagulant activity of warfarin.
Alfalfa contains a large amount of vitamin K. This could theoretically interfere with the activity of warfarin.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, alfalfa might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that alfalfa decreases blood sugar in diabetic mice. Also, in one case report, a diabetic patient experienced hypoglycemia after consuming alfalfa extract. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, alfalfa might interfere with the activity of contraceptive drugs.
Alfalfa contains coumestrol, a phytoestrogen, and isoflavonoids, which have estrogenic effects.
Estrogens
Theoretically, alfalfa might interfere with hormone therapy.
Alfalfa contains coumestrol, a phytoestrogen, and isoflavonoids, which have estrogenic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, alfalfa might decrease the efficacy of immunosuppressive therapy.
In vitro research and human case reports suggest that alfalfa may have immunostimulant effects.
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of alfalfa with photosensitizing drugs might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that excessive doses of alfalfa may increase photosensitivity, possibly due to its chlorophyll content. It is unclear if this effect would be clinically relevant in humans.
Barley Aerial Parts Juice, Powder
Triclabendazole (Egaten)
Theoretically, barley might decrease the clinical effects of triclabendazole.
Animal research suggests that a diet supplemented with barley can reduce the bioavailability of triclabendazole when taken concomitantly. This effect has not been shown in humans.
