Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: spearmint extract. There are no other inactive ingredients listed beyond the active extract itself.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for spearmint extract isn't established in the data we hold. Effectiveness ratings for age-related cognitive decline, cognitive function, flatulence, irritable bowel syndrome, postoperative nausea and vomiting, and osteoarthritis all show insufficient reliable evidence to make a recommendation.
If you're considering this supplement for any of these uses, talk with your pharmacist about what the current science actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spearmint is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. However, concentrated supplements and oils warrant more caution than food or tea amounts, and the data on supplement doses specifically is limited.
Allergic reactions are possible — topically, spearmint oil and leaves have caused allergic skin reactions and lip inflammation in sensitive people; orally, an allergy-related swelling of the soft palate and oral lichen planus have been reported. One clinical trial participant reported anxiety, though it's unclear whether spearmint extract caused it.
There isn't enough safety data in pregnancy or lactation to know either way — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check whether you take hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can damage the liver) or central nervous system depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, or opioids). Both interactions are Moderate severity and need a pharmacist's review of your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Spearmint extract is a single-ingredient powder with limited evidence for the conditions it's marketed for. If you take medications that affect your liver or central nervous system, check with your pharmacist first.
Stick to amounts similar to food or tea use unless your doctor approves a higher dose, and watch for allergic reactions.

Spearmint extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, spearmint might alter the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Animal research suggests that (-)-carvone, a major constituent of spearmint, has sedative effects. However, in humans, chewing spearmint-flavored gum induced arousal effects.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, high doses of spearmint might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.
Animal research suggests that drinking spearmint tea for 30 days can increase markers of liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and cause liver degeneration and necrosis, in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
