Gotu Kola Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Gotu Kola against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Gotu Kola by BulkSupplements.com
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This powder contains one active ingredient: Gotu Kola Whole Herb Extract. The product has no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Gotu Kola shows possibly effective evidence for venous insufficiency — a condition where veins struggle to return blood from the legs — and for healing burns. For radiation dermatitis (skin damage from cancer treatment), cognitive function, and Alzheimer disease, the evidence doesn't support benefit or is too limited to judge.
The data we hold doesn't establish reliable evidence that it works for generalized anxiety disorder.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu Kola is generally well tolerated over the short term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach irritation and nausea.
Applied to skin, it occasionally causes eczema or allergic contact dermatitis. Liver damage is rare but has been reported in at least four cases; however, contaminants in those products couldn't be ruled out, and doses weren't documented.
One trial of 120 mg daily for six months showed no change in liver function. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe in either situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check your medications against these categories: CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, certain pain relievers) at Moderate severity, and hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can stress the liver) at Moderate severity. Use the search tool on this page to look up your prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola may help with venous insufficiency or wound healing, but it can interact with sedatives and liver-toxic drugs. If you take CNS depressants or medications that affect your liver, check with us before starting.
Avoid it if you're pregnant or nursing. A quick medication check on this page is a smart first step.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gotu Kola Whole Herb Extract by BulkSupplements.com has documented interactions with two categories of medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The main concern is central nervous system (CNS) depressants — drugs that slow brain activity, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain relievers. Taking gotu kola with these may boost their sedative effect.
Lab research suggests gotu kola may bind to GABA receptors, which are involved in calming the nervous system.
The second concern is hepatotoxic drugs — medications that can stress the liver. Combined use might add to that stress.
There are four case reports of liver damage linked to gotu kola, though it's unclear whether gotu kola caused the damage or if contaminants in the product were responsible. One clinical trial found no liver changes when people took 120 mg daily for six months, so the risk may depend on dose and product quality.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.
