Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: 8 grams of spirulina per serving. Spirulina is a blue-green algae harvested as a whole food and used as a nutritional supplement.
There are no other active ingredients. The product contains no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Spirulina is rated possibly effective for high blood pressure (hypertension). For acne, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), iron deficiency anemia, and arsenic poisoning, the evidence in our data is insufficient to establish whether it works.
If you're considering spirulina for any of these uses, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spirulina is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects reported in trials include abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, flatulence, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
Rare allergic reactions—including rashes, itching, and in one case a severe reaction (anaphylaxis)—have been reported. Mild gum bleeding and bruising have occurred in a small number of people taking spirulina supplements.
A major caveat: quality varies widely among spirulina products, and some batches can be contaminated with toxins or heavy metals. This is a real concern when choosing a brand.
Data on safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not on file, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to be.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking spirulina if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin), immunosuppressants, or antidiabetes medications. Spirulina may increase bleeding risk, interfere with immune-suppressing therapy, or lower blood sugar—all effects worth discussing before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Spirulina may help lower blood pressure, though evidence for other uses is unproven. If you take blood thinners, immune-suppressing medications, or diabetes drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product—the interactions are documented and worth reviewing.
Quality and contamination risk vary by brand, so source matters. Have a conversation with your own healthcare provider about whether spirulina fits your health plan.

Spirulina 8 g by Nutricost Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Nutricost Spirulina 8 g contains one active ingredient—spirulina—which has documented interactions with three medication types.
The most serious concern is anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners and anti-clotting medications): spirulina may theoretically increase bleeding risk, though this effect is considered unlikely based on available evidence.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Spirulina can also interfere with immunosuppressant medications (drugs that tamp down immune function), since the algae stimulates immunity. Additionally, it may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you're taking antidiabetes drugs, because spirulina itself can lower blood glucose levels.
Altogether, these interactions span 327 individual medications. If you take any blood thinner, immune-suppressing drug, or diabetes medication, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before starting spirulina.

Spirulina
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.
