This product contains one active ingredient: squalene, a naturally occurring compound sourced from shark liver oil. The capsule itself is made of gelatin and contains glycerin, purified water, and D-alpha tocopherol (a form of vitamin E) as inactive ingredients.

The evidence for squalene's effectiveness isn't established in the data we hold. We have ratings for several purposes — cancer, chemotherapy-induced low white blood cell count, common cold, influenza, and radiation-induced nausea and vomiting — but all show insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That means there isn't enough solid research yet to say whether it works for these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Squalene is generally tolerated short-term, but human safety data are limited and product quality varies between brands. The most serious concern we have on file is a case of severe liver inflammation (hepatitis) linked to shark liver oil taken twice daily for 2 weeks — the person developed jaundice, itching, belly pain, and high liver enzymes.
Higher doses (15 grams daily for 4 weeks) have been shown to raise total cholesterol and lower HDL (the "good" cholesterol) in healthy adults, though these changes reversed after stopping. There's also a documented risk of a type of pneumonia (lipoid pneumonia) from aspiration of shark liver oil or squalene.
During pregnancy, the safety data advise against use. The same applies while breastfeeding — there isn't enough data to know it's safe.
