Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Squash Seed Extract in dried form. Pumpkin seed has been studied for urinary and prostate health, though the strength of evidence varies by condition.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: herbal extract.
  • We looked for evidence on: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Overactive bladder.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Pumpkin is rated "Possibly Effective" for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Pumpkin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Overactive bladder.

The evidence for pumpkin seed is mixed. It's possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—enlarged prostate.

For other uses listed—male-pattern hair loss, interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections—there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pumpkin as a food is generally well tolerated. When taken as a concentrated supplement like this one, most people tolerate it without trouble, though abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting have been reported in some users.

Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has occurred. Two case reports describe hair loss 1–3 weeks after eating bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash with high levels of cucurbitacin, a naturally occurring compound in wild varieties; this is uncommon with cultivated pumpkin.

There isn't enough safety data on concentrated pumpkin supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.

Squash by Hawaii Pharm: Common Questions

Does Squash by Hawaii Pharm interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Squash has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Squash contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help my enlarged prostate?
Pumpkin seed extract is possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia—that's the clinical name for enlarged prostate. It's one of the few uses where we have decent evidence, but results vary. Talk with your doctor about whether it fits your treatment plan.
What if I have stomach trouble when I take it?
Abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting have been reported. These are mild in most cases, but if they're bothersome or don't settle down, stop it and let your pharmacist know.
What's in this besides the squash seed extract?
The liquid also contains alcohol, water, and glycerin—these are inactive ingredients that help deliver and preserve the extract. If you need to avoid alcohol, check the label or ask your pharmacist about the concentration.
Is this the same as eating pumpkin seeds?
No. This is a concentrated extract, not whole seeds. Pumpkin as food is well tolerated, but concentrated supplements haven't been studied as much, so there's a little more caution with concentrated products like this one.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant?
There isn't enough safety data on concentrated pumpkin supplements in pregnancy. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist—they can give you personalized advice based on your situation.
Is this safe while breastfeeding?
Safety during breastfeeding hasn't been well studied for concentrated pumpkin supplements. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.
