Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: saffron extract at 88.5 mg per capsule. Saffron is a spice derived from the crocus flower that has been studied for its potential effects on nerve damage from chemotherapy and age-related cognitive decline.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose, with silicon dioxide and vegetable stearate as inactive ingredients (binders and flow agents).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Saffron extract is rated possibly effective for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage from cancer treatment) and Alzheimer disease based on available clinical evidence. The data we hold does not establish effectiveness for other uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, saffron extract is generally well tolerated at supplement doses, though gastrointestinal complaints, nausea, sedation, and vomiting do occur. Rare serious reactions include anaphylaxis (a severe allergic response).
Allergy to saffron has been reported in clinical trials and can develop from food exposure or occupational contact. At higher doses—30 mg twice daily over 26 weeks—saffron has been associated with anxiety and hypomania in trials; at 30 mg daily for 6 weeks, the rate matched placebo.
Saffron is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy because it may stimulate the uterus; there is not enough reliable safety information for breastfeeding, so supplement amounts should be avoided.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this saffron extract, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, opioids—saffron adds to drowsiness), blood pressure medications (saffron may lower pressure further), diabetes drugs (saffron may lower blood sugar), or use caffeine regularly (saffron may slow how your body clears it). Moderate interactions are documented for all four categories.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Saffron extract may be worth considering if you're exploring options for nerve damage from chemotherapy or cognitive concerns related to aging, and your doctor thinks it fits. If you take blood pressure medicine, diabetes medication, sedatives, or consume caffeine regularly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Standardized Saffron Extract 88.5 mg by Only Natural Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Only Natural's Standardized Saffron Extract can interact with several types of medications.
The main concern is with CNS depressants (such as sedatives, sleep aids, and opioids)—saffron itself causes drowsiness, and combining it with these drugs could pile on the sedative effect. Clinical trials show that saffron extract at 60 mg daily produced drowsiness; animal studies suggest it deepens the sedation from barbiturates.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Saffron may also lower blood pressure on its own, so combining it with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) could bring your pressure down further. Similarly, if you take diabetes medications, saffron appears to lower blood sugar levels, which might increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)—especially since saffron extract reduced fasting glucose in some clinical trials when used alongside diabetes drugs.
There's also a possible interaction with caffeine: a small study hints that saffron may slow how your body clears caffeine, potentially making caffeine stick around longer.
Altogether, these interactions span 521 individual medications. Use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions before starting this product, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood pressure medicine, diabetes medication, sedatives, or use caffeine regularly.

For each ingredient in Standardized Saffron Extract 88.5 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Saffron extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some clinical research shows that taking saffron extract reduces fasting levels of glucose when used in addition to hypoglycemic agents. However, saffron powder itself has not been shown to reduce fasting glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects.
Animal and human research suggests that saffron extract can decrease blood pressure.
Caffeine
Theoretically, saffron might inhibit the metabolism of caffeine.
A small clinical study suggests that taking saffron powder 300 mg in 150 mL water daily for 5 days and then taking caffeine 200 mg seems to reduce caffeine metabolite levels in the saliva and urine in males, but not females. Theoretically, this may be due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 by saffron.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron and CNS depressants might have additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that taking saffron extract 60 mg orally daily for 26 weeks can cause drowsiness and sedation. Animal research suggests that adding saffron to hexobarbital further increases sleeping and slows motor activity.
