What’s inside
Full disclosure
Super Charge! Xtreme 4.0 is a powder with 11 active ingredients designed to support workout performance and recovery.
The main components are taurine (an amino acid and cellular regulator), L-tyrosine (an amino acid precursor to thyroid and brain chemicals), beta-alanine (for muscular endurance), L-arginine (for blood vessel function), creatine (for muscle energy), caffeine (a stimulant), and several amino acid blends and performance compounds including picamilon, nitrous malate, and other proprietary complexes. The product also contains inactive ingredients like maltodextrin, citric acid, silica, sucralose, and riboflavin.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. Caffeine is likely effective for mental alertness and athletic performance.
Creatine and beta-alanine are possibly effective for athletic and physical performance. L-tyrosine is possibly effective for cognitive function and memory, and is effective for a rare genetic condition (phenylketonuria).
Taurine is possibly effective for congestive heart failure but possibly ineffective for weight loss. L-arginine, picamilon, and the blend components have either insufficient evidence or no established effectiveness ratings in our data for most of their proposed uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Caffeine is generally well tolerated in moderate amounts but high doses can cause anxiety, insomnia, tremors, and rarely, stroke. L-tyrosine is generally well tolerated but larger doses can cause headache and fatigue.
Taurine is generally well tolerated short-term at typical doses, though long-term safety is less certain; common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion. Beta-alanine commonly causes harmless tingling and flushing of the skin (paresthesia), usually starting on the scalp within 20 minutes and lasting about an hour — intensity depends on dose.
Creatine is generally well tolerated but can cause dehydration, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and water retention; those with kidney problems should be careful. L-arginine can cause abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, headache, and insomnia.
Picamilon has limited human safety data. Regarding pregnancy and nursing: caffeine is possibly safe in pregnancy at limited doses but possibly unsafe at higher amounts — discuss safe limits with your doctor.
Beta-alanine and creatine should be avoided in pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. Picamilon should be avoided in pregnancy and while nursing.
Taurine is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. L-tyrosine and L-arginine have insufficient data for pregnancy and lactation — talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Check your exact medications if you take: ephedrine (Major risk with caffeine), blood pressure medications (taurine and L-arginine), blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (L-arginine), diabetes drugs (L-arginine), levodopa for Parkinson's (L-tyrosine), thyroid hormones (L-tyrosine), barbiturates or other seizure medications (caffeine), quinolone antibiotics (caffeine), clozapine or other antipsychotics (caffeine), or cimetidine (caffeine). Also check if you take potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or sildenafil (all with L-arginine), or niacin (with picamilon).
