What’s inside
Full disclosure
Super Colostrum is a one-ingredient supplement: bovine colostrum, which is the nutrient-rich fluid that comes from a cow's udder in the first days after birth. The capsules also contain gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate — the inactive ingredients that hold the product together and fill the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data we hold shows bovine colostrum is possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea and rotaviral diarrhea (the stomach illness caused by rotavirus). It's also possibly effective for exercise-induced respiratory infections — meaning upper respiratory infections that crop up after hard training.
For necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious bowel condition in newborns), the evidence rates it as possibly ineffective.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bovine colostrum is generally well tolerated in most adults. A small number of trial participants reported mild bloating, nausea, diarrhea, and unsettled stomach at about the same rate as those taking a whey-based control.
One person with HIV-related cryptosporidiosis had nausea and vomiting. In HIV patients taking it for infectious diarrhea, elevated liver function tests and a drop in red blood cell count (decreased serum hematocrit) have been reported.
There isn't enough reliable safety data to recommend this product during pregnancy. Safety during breastfeeding is not well studied, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.
Anyone with a milk or dairy allergy should avoid it.
